Celtics’ Jayson Tatum Drops Notable Quote on Jaylen Brown After Win

The Boston Celtics beat the Miami Heat 147-129 on Wednesday night at Kaseya Center. Jaylen Brown poured in 43 points with 7 assists and 3 rebounds. Jayson Tatum recorded his first triple-double of the season with 25 points, 18 rebounds, and 11 assists. Sam Hauser added 23 points.

Boston set a franchise record with 53 first-quarter points, shooting 11-of-15 from three in the opening period. A 24-3 run to close the quarter turned a tight game into a rout.

After the game, Tatum was asked about Brown’s growth this season. His answer spoke to how he views his teammate heading into the playoffs.

Tatum’s Quote on Jaylen Brown

Tatum did not hesitate when asked what has impressed him most about Brown this year.

“Just his ability to read the floor,” Tatum said. “Obviously a hell of a two-way player. That’s what we focus on, playing both sides of the floor.”

The praise carried weight coming from someone who has watched Brown’s evolution up close since entering the league. Tatum also spoke to NBC Sports Boston postgame. The praise went further.

“I thought it was special. Obviously, someone that’s always been capable…A lot of times, the NBA is about opportunity, and guys really the make the most out of the special ones, and that’s exactly what he’s been able to do this year.”

Brown carried the Celtics through 62 games without Tatum this year, averaging 28.6 points per game while elevating every other part of his game. Wednesday was the latest evidence. He scored the Celtics’ first 11 points and finished with 43 in his seventh 40-point game of the season.

A Historic Night for the Celtics

The first quarter will go down in Celtics history.

The 53 points broke a franchise record. So did the 11 three-pointers on 15 attempts. No pair of Celtics teammates had each reached 17 points in the same quarter in the play-by-play era. Brown and Hauser did it together in twelve minutes.

Hauser was perfect from deep in the period, draining all five of his attempts including four in the final four minutes. Scheierman sparked the decisive run with a hustle play on defense, picking off a pass and finding Brown in transition for a reverse dunk. Hauser buried three-pointers on consecutive possessions. Payton Pritchard tipped in a Tatum air-ball at the buzzer for the 53rd point. The building went quiet.

Miami fought back in the third quarter with 45 points of their own, cutting the deficit to nine early in the fourth. But Hauser steadied things with a pair of mid-range jumpers and Tatum hit a stepback three to push the lead back to 16. The comeback never materialized.

Tatum Continues to Build

The triple-double was Tatum’s first since returning from injury. Eighteen rebounds came within one of his career high. After the game, Jaylen Brown spoke on his teammate and returned the praise.

“He almost had 20 boards tonight, which is exceptional…Him being who he is, is gonna help us be a better team.”

The Celtics are 51-25 and have six regular season games remaining. Tatum has now played 12 games since his March 6 return. The partnership with Brown is producing at its highest level at exactly the right time.

Final Word for the Celtics

Brown and Tatum combined for 68 points, 21 rebounds, and 18 assists on Wednesday night. When both are operating at this level, the Celtics look like a team nobody wants to see in the playoffs.

Tatum sees the growth. Brown is proving it every night. The two-way evolution Tatum highlighted is what separates Brown from the player he was a year ago.

Boston heads to Milwaukee on Friday. The postseason is right around the corner.
