Chargers Cornerback Named Potential Breakout Candidate

The Los Angeles Chargers had a fifth-round draft pick become one of the steals of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Cornerback Tarheeb Still didn’t see any action in the first three games of the 2024-25 season, before an unfortunate injury to a teammate gave him more snaps.

In his rookie season in Los Angeles, Still proved that he should be getting more playing time moving forward. Now, the former Maryland Terrapin has the chance to put in name with the best cornerbacks in the league next season.

The Athletic had its NFL staff writer predict a potential breakout player for every team, with Chargers writer Daniel Popper naming the CB.

“Still was a fifth-round pick in 2024, and he turned into one of the steals of the draft. A season-ending injury for Asante Samuel Jr. cleared an opportunity for Still, who quickly established himself as an impact starter and finished with four interceptions,” Popper wrote for The Athletic.

“He has tremendous instincts in zone coverage and natural ball skills, which make him a perfect fit in defensive coordinator Jesse Minter’s scheme. Still is capable of putting up big production and that could shift him into the national spotlight in 2025.”

Still finished seventh in the 2025 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year voting.

Tarheeb Still told reporters after the first day of OTAs that he went over film after his first year, looking to make the jump from his rookie season to year two.

“I can be better at a lot. I mean, there’s always room to grow. I would just say having my eyes on the right spot. Knowing what I’m looking at, knowing my key, because that’ll really take me to my work, take me where I need to be,” Still said.

“I’m really just having my eyes in the right spot and then make sure I’m over communicating with the linebackers, the other corners, the safeties. Really just stuff like that.”

Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter said that Still is on a different level than where he was last year. Bolts defensive backs coach Steve Clinkscale said that the corner has grown up and matured.

Still said that he hopes to be a vital piece to the defense to help the team win.

Justin Herbert Challenging Still

Tarheeb Still has the opportunity to train against teammate Justin Herbert daily, allowing him to sharpen his skillset at practice.

Still made an appearance on the Rich Eisen Show on April 8th and said that he has intercepted Herbert at practice.

“I remember one time, I picked him off early on, when I first got [to the Chargers], we were in Costa Mesa. He came to me in the locker room and was like, ‘Now you’re going to have to do it again,’” Still said. “Meaning he’s going to come at me again and throw the ball at me again.”

John Kosko of Pro Football Focus named the Chargers’ secondary as the ninth-best entering next season, saying that Still flashed great potential at times.
