Charvarius Ward Shares Details About His Traumatic Injury

After being plagued with injuries in the defensive back room this season, the Indianapolis Colts finally got some good news with cornerback Charvarius Ward being designated to return to practice with his 21-day activation period from IR to the 53-man roster.

Ward has been placed on concussion protocol twice this season and was placed on injured reserve when he suffered his second concussion, forcing him to miss six games this season.

The corner has returned to practice and has cleared the concussion protocol ahead of the Week 12 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. Ward made his first media appearance since being placed on IR, providing a detailed explanation of the symptoms he had dealt with over the past five weeks.

The Indianapolis Colts signed Ward to a three-year, $54 million contract in free agency to shadow the opposing team’s number one wide receiver. But has only featured four times for the 8-2 Colts.

Ward missed Week 2 after suffering a concussion in the season opener, but managed to play the rest of the game. The cornerback described the symptoms of his first injury of the season as similar to a migraine.

The $54 million defender suffered his second concussion of the season during a pregame warmup accident in Week 6, when he collided with a teammate, which forced him out of that game and the following four weeks.

“It took me a while to be ready to come back. All that concussion [stuff] really messed me up physically and mentally. I was bruised up for a long time,” Ward told reporters. “I was getting dizzy for like damn near a month. Last week in the bye, that’s when it kind of really stopped and I was able to lock in and focus with my eyes…”

“I was throwing up… I was getting dizzy for a month. That wasn’t normal. That was like a real deal, traumatic injury for me. A lot of emotions… It was pretty tough, but I’m feeling good now.”

Playing With New All-Pro Teammate In Return

Charvarius Ward will be faced with a big test in his return to the field, as the team will take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 12.

Ward, who started his career with KC, will have a new teammate to play with in his first game back.

The Colts acquired New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner at the trade deadline, in exchange for two first-round and Adonai Mitchell, giving Indy one of the best CB partnerships in the league.

“I think it was a good trade. It’s going to help our team out a lot,” Ward said about the trade to acquire Gardner. “I don’t think I ever played with a corner as good me or got more talent than me in some areas. I’m excited to go out there and play with him.”

“I think throughout both my and Sauce’s careers, I feel like we’re both number one corners in our team, so [opposing] teams throw the ball away from us. Now, it’s like none of us can duck the smoke.”
