Chelsea legend backed to replace Thomas Tuchel after he finishes managing England

Jody Morris has tipped Chelsea legend Frank Lampard to replace Thomas Tuchel when the German boss is no longer managing England.

Lampard has massively impressed as head coach of Coventry City, who sit top of the Championship table and could be set for promotion to the Premier League if they continue their fine start to the 2025-26 campaign.

It has been a dramatic turnaround for the Sky Blues, who were 17th in the league when Lampard arrived last season before they reached the play-offs after a stunning run of form under the legendary former Chelsea star.

Morris, Lampard’s assistant for his managerial stints at Derby County and Chelsea, feels the ex-midfielder was written off too quickly after he was sacked by Everton in 2023 and his caretaker spell in charge of the Blues.

According to Morris, Lampard is the best performing manager in any league this season – not just the Championship – so England could be taking a look at him when Tuchel is no longer in charge, with the German currently under contract until the end of the 2026 World Cup.

Asked if Lampard would be interested in the England job and if he could see him as a future manager of the Three Lions, Morris told Metro via GeckoPlay Casino: ‘Absolutely.

‘When you look at the English managers that are out there, Eddie Howe is the outstanding candidate. He has been for the last five or six years. But then you can’t help but think about Lampard.

‘The jobs he’s done at previous clubs already, he’s English, he’s bright. I think it’s something he’d be open to. He’s performed at [international] level and knows what it takes.

‘He understands players really well. I think it’d be a great fit for the FA. If he’d want to do it after Tuchel, it depends how long he’s in the job for… I don’t know.

‘If Lampard gets the success he looks like he’s en route to getting at Coventry, I’d imagine quite a few people would like his services.’

Quizzed if Lampard was written off too quickly as a football manager, Morris added: ‘Yeah I think so. I know how much hard work he puts into the jobs he’s doing.

‘He had a difficult time at Everton after helping to keep them up. A lot of people said they were favourites to go down and he did a great job in keeping them up.

‘The season after that, he would’ve liked to have performed a little better but there were a lot of things going on around the club. Previous managers and the managers after him found it to be a difficult job.

‘Looking back at it, I think he did a better job than he was given credit for at the time. Coming back to Chelsea, he’d admit himself he’d have liked to have done better.

‘But again, he came into the role when the club was in a massive transition. I don’t think the place was great the moment he walked in.

‘But he’s proving now, if you look at what he’s done at Coventry, I don’t think there’s too many managers who’ve done a better job in any league, let alone just the Championship.

‘The performances he’s got from individual players and the team collectively. When he arrived, they were towards the bottom of the league and went racing up.

‘They managed to make the play-offs and he’s continued that form with an outstanding start to this season. It’s not just the points accumulation, it’s the football they’re playing.

‘They’re difficult to beat and they’re an attractive side to watch, scoring a load of goals. I thought they were better than Sunderland in both [play-off] games [last season].

‘It shows you how small the margins are. One individual error or set-piece can knock you out. I was gutted for him. But an amazing job he’s doing.’
