Chicago Native Patrick Beverley Arrested on Felony Count: Report

Former Chicago Bulls guard Patrick Beverley, a hometown favorite during the 2022–23 season, was arrested in Texas on a third-degree felony assault charge, according to TMZ Sports.

The report states Beverley allegedly assaulted an unidentified family or household member, with accusations involving impeding breath or circulation — a serious felony offense under Texas law.

Beverley posted a $40,000 bond and was expected to be released later on Friday.

Chicago Roots: Beverley’s Bulls Tenure and South Side Legacy

Beverley, a Chicago native and product of Marshall High School, played a key role with the Bulls after being acquired in February 2023, returning home in a move that generated major excitement throughout the city.

His homecoming press availability quickly went viral across Chicago sports media.

“I’m really excited,” Beverley said at his introductory practice session. “You can tell by the energy I have, the smile on my face, the joy.”

He described himself as a leader shaped by his Chicago upbringing:

“Just a born leader. My grandma, the city of Chicago, she adopted 11 kids. I’m the youngest out of most of them. Born leader.”

He added, “The game is about putting the ball in the hole and stopping the other team from putting the ball in the hole. When it comes to shooting and stopping people, I’m pretty good at that… The way I play, I run through a wall for any team I play. This is even more. It’s the city where I’m from… I might pull some [stuff] out I ain’t never did before. I’m super stoked.”

With Chicago, Beverley averaged 5.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.0 steals over 22 games while helping the Bulls make a late-season push into the Play-In Tournament. His defensive intensity, vocal leadership and local ties made him an instant fan favorite on the United Center floor.

However, he was not re-signed after the season.

Arrest Adds to String of Controversies Since Leaving the Bulls

Beverley has not appeared in an NBA game since May 2, 2024, when he was with the Milwaukee Bucks during the postseason. That matchup ended in controversy when Beverley became involved in a heated altercation with Indiana Pacers fans.

During the incident, Beverley struck a woman in the head with a basketball, demanded the ball from another fan, and then threw it back into the crowd, an act that drew national criticism.

The NBA suspended Beverley for four games, a punishment he has not yet served. The fans involved later filed a civil lawsuit, alleging physical pain, emotional distress, humiliation, medical bills and lost wages.

After going unsigned last offseason, Beverley signed with Hapoel Tel Aviv in the Israeli Basketball League. His stint there ended in controversy as well, with the team suspending him in February before ultimately parting ways.

Arrest Follows Blowback Over Podcast Remarks

Days before the arrest, Beverley drew backlash for comments made on Hoopin’ N Hollerin’ Podcast about  Dallas Mavericks star Klay Thompson and rapper Megan Thee Stallion. Beverley and former NBA guard Jason Williams suggested Thompson’s play was being affected by his relationship with the musician, using NSFW language.

Thompson sharply criticized the remarks, calling them “disgusting and disturbing.”

“Referring to my girlfriend as a ‘p*y’ is disgusting and disturbing,”** Thompson wrote. “How would y’all feel if I referred to your wives that way? Do better.”

Future Uncertain for Former Bulls Guard

With a felony charge pending in Texas, a lawsuit unresolved, and an unserved NBA suspension looming, Beverley’s basketball future is now deeply uncertain.

The former Bulls guard has yet to release a public statement regarding the arrest.
