Obi, 17, became the Red Devils’ youngest ever starter in the Premier League.

The striker is 17 and 156 days and breaks the record set by Mason Greenwood in May 2019.

Obi is 67 days younger than Greenwood was when he played in the 2-0 defeat to Cardiff City.

Amorim explained his decision to start the youngster and insisted that he does not want any pressure put on him.

He said: “I think we need to focus a lot on our young players. For me, it’s not a massive game for Chido.

“I know that it’s important for Chido, but I don’t want a lot of pressure on Chido, I just want him to do what he knows.

“He played really well in those minutes against Wolverhampton.

“He’s improving a lot, and then Newcastle, the rotation. I feel that he’s ready to cope with the demands of the Premier League.

“Amass has already shown that he’s ready, Tyler, the same.

“It will be tough on them because this team is really strong in front, with a lot of pace, but they are improving, so they are ready.

Obi was joined by an experimental-looking Manchester United team as Amorim rang the changes.

The Portuguese manager was evidently prioritising the Europa League second leg against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday.

Altay Bayındır replaced Andre Onana in goal while Luke Shaw took the armband.

Rare starts were handed to Mason Mount, Tyler Fredricson and Harry Amass.

The average age of the team was 22 years and 270 days which was the youngest ever fielded by the club.

Obi has already made his debut for Man United as he came off the bench against Tottenham, Everton, Leicester City, Wolves and Bournemouth in the league.

While he also faced Fulham in the FA Cup but is yet to score for the first team.
