Chiefs Announce Travis Kelce News as Retirement Decision Looms

Tight end Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs are coming up on the end of the regular season, and their final game for the 2025-26 season will be on Sunday, January 4, against the Las Vegas Raiders on the road. That last game should be an interesting one, to see Kelce and the Chiefs up against Maxx Crosby and the Raiders without quarterback Patrick Mahomes in toe. The Raiders have a 2-13 record going into Week 17, so their having issues with their franchise this season.

But first, Kelce and the Chiefs are up against the 12-3 Denver Broncos on Christmas Day at Arrowhead Stadium. The Broncos are No. 1 in the NFC West going into the game, so it’s going to be tough for the Chiefs to face them without Mahomes, but at least they’ll have Kelce in the fold.

Now, ahead of the game, the Kansas City Chiefs have announced news on Kelce that should give him wind on his back going into the Christmas Day game. It’s worth noting that since his soon-to-be wife Taylor Swift usually attends home games, she’s expected to be there. How could she not spend Christmas with her fiancé, right?

Travis Kelce Gets More Props Ahead of Christmas Game

On Tuesday, December 23, the Chiefs officially announced that Kelce has joined Hall of Famer Jerry Rice as the only two players in NFL history with at least 800 receiving yards in 12 consecutive seasons.

As the season wraps up, Kelce has just 20 yards to go to tie his 2024 receiving yard total of 823, but he’s a ways off from his common 1,000 receiving yards tally. Kelce is coming up on 13,000 receiving yards in his NFL career.

Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy sang Kelce’s praises on Tuesday. “What Travis has done to this organization, to his teammates, to his coaches, to this city, it’s special. You hate to even hear that, and you know, I hope … that that’s not true,” Nagy said to reporters.

Nagy also said he had huge respect for Kelce, noting, “You know, I just have so much respect. I’ve been fortunate enough selfishly to be with him for many years, and I’ve learned a lot from him.”

Travis Kelce Has a ‘Great Spirit’ on the Sideline

“What he’s going through even in these last few games- we’re out of the playoffs, mathematically, we’re out,” Nagy added. “He’s out here every single day at practice, leading, helping people out, fighting his … off on game day. Has a great spirit with him on the sideline.”

Immediately following the game, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid talked about how much the loss stung.

“Nobody likes losing in this business,” Reid said in his postgame press conference. “My hat goes off to the guys that put together all these years. That’s part of it. We can learn from it and need to do that going forward. Sometimes a good kick in the tail helps you, coaches and players.”

So, Kelce will be stepping onto the field on Christmas Day for what may be his final Christmas game and second to last game in the NFL.
