The Kansas City Chiefs have had a ton of success over the past few years, and become of that, they’ve become one of the most high-profile teams in the NFL. Having star players such as Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce in the fold has helped, as has winning a handful of Super Bowls.
With that in mind, it would be a total jolt if the Chiefs were to move across state lines, but a new report indicates that it’s a real possibility. According to the Associated Press, the Chiefs has formally asked for an extension to a deadline that was originally the end of June for a “stadium financing package from the state of Kansas.” The AP adds that it’s a sign that “the NFL franchise’s potential move across the state line from Missouri is a legitimate possibility.”
Kansas City Chiefs Still Eyeing a Possible Move: Report
The AP obtained a letter on Thursday, June 26, from Kansas City Chiefs president Mark Donovan to Kansas Senate president Ty Masterson asking for the extension. In the letter, Donovan said that the Chiefs have made “significant progress” on their work for a new stadium development but that they need more time to bring “the effort to full fruition,” according to the AP.

Next up, the Kansas Legislative Coordinating Council will meet July 7 to look at whether to extend that deadline.
“The letter from Mark Donovan indicates that the drive to bring this historic project to Kansas is moving down the field,” Masterson commented in a statement. “Now that we are in the red zone, this extension will provide stakeholders sufficient time to ensure the ball crosses the goal line.”
For more than 50 years, the Chiefs and Royals have played at the Truman Sports Complex in Kansas City, Missouri, and Arrowhead Stadium and Kauffman Stadium share parking facilities. However, the leases with Jackson County will expire in January 2031, so the Chiefs and Royals have been working on a plan to move forward for a while now.
Former NFL Quarterback Throws Shade at Patrick Mahomes
In other Chiefs news, former NFL quarterback Ben Roethlisberger recently made some disturbing comments about Mahomes stating that he’s already out of his prime.
Roethlisberger, who played for the Steelers, talked about it on an episode of his podcast, Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger, in the context of also taking about veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who recently signed a one-year deal with Pittsburgh.
When asked to compare Rodgers and Mahomes, he said, “Well, I would take Aaron and his prime over Patrick now. I think Aaron Rodgers at his prime was one of the top few to ever do it, and so is Patrick Mahomes at his prime. Patrick Mahomes is just entering out of his prime. I think Aaron Rodgers.”
He did have some positive things to say about Mahomes, though, stating, “Yes, I think Patrick Mahomes is phenomenal. He’s going to go down as, you know, another arguable goat… There’s only like one goat, but there’s goats—the whole herd of goats, I think Aaron in his prime, then we’re talking about Patrick right now. Yeah. If we’re talking prime and prime, then I’m going to have to think really hard on that.”
