Just as they have at other points this season, the Kansas City Chiefs had an unsung hero step up with the team being at less than 100% capacity in Week 6. Sunday Night Football’s underrated star, at least on the offensive side of the ball, came from the wide receiver collective.
Veteran Marquise “Hollywood” Brown delivered one of his best performances in a Kansas City uniform. He shined against the Detroit Lions, recording 4 receptions for 45 yards and 2 touchdowns.
It’s been a long time coming for Brown, who’s finally having the success the Chiefs hoped for.

Fresh off a game worthy of praise, Brown shifted the focus elsewhere.
“Like I said, I just give all the glory to God,” Brown said. “I’m just here to serve. Thankful for this organization. Just trying to get better each week and have some fun.”
When Brown originally signed with the Chiefs in the 2024 offseason, the team thought he’d be an ideal complement to Rashee Rice and then-rookie Xavier Worthy. One drive into the preseason, however, he went down with a sternoclavicular injury. He didn’t return until December and was obviously a shell of himself trying to adjust on the fly. By then, Rice was done for the year with a knee injury of his own.
This summer, an ankle injury limited Brown during the weeks leading up to the regular season. Rice missed Kansas City’s first six games due to a suspension. The Chiefs are making do with what they have, and Brown is helping lead the way.
Through six weeks, Brown ranks first on the team in targets and receptions with 44 and 30, respectively. He’s second to tight end Travis Kelce in yards with 302, and he’s tied with fellow wideout Tyquan Thornton for the team lead in receiving touchdowns (3).
That presents a challenge, even without Rice having played a single snap yet. There’s only one football to go around, but Brown welcomes that context.
“We know it’s one football,” Brown said. “We’ve got a lot of alphas in the room, and we understand your week is different each week but that doesn’t change how you come to work. That doesn’t change how you play. Play hard for each other. E.G.E. â everybody’s gotta eat.”
Chiefs Welcoming Brown’s Impact in ‘From Everywhere’ Offense
Speaking to the media on Sunday night, head coach Andy Reid tipped his cap to Brown for a bang-up job in Week 6.
“That’s what I was saying, he had a nice day,” Reid said. “Four for 45, a couple of TDs. He’s a good football player. He loves to play. We try to get him the ball in many ways. We had the jet sweep to him, which was good down there in the red zone. That was a helper.”
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes believes Brown slots in perfectly in an offense that’s transformed from stale to one of football’s most dangerous. That’s with perhaps its best weapon soon getting back on the field.
“I think with Hollywood, he’s always had the talent,” Mahomes said. “He’s dealt with a lot of injuries but when he’s there, he plays hard, he understands the game, and he does a great job. The great thing about this offense is it can come from everywhere. Obviously Hollywood, Tyquan has had big games, Xavier [Worthy] has had big games, Travis [Kelce], obviously, other guys.
“Now we’re getting Rashee [Rice] back, so it’s all about building depth. I think [Brett] Veach has done a great job with that. Those guys love each other. That receiving room, they love each other. They want each other to do good so when you have that mindset as a whole room, you can have a lot of success.”
Many buried Brown after an injury-shortened 2024. Many buried the Chiefs after an 0-2 start to the season or, heck, a shocking Week 5 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. If the last few weeks of offensive production are any indication, though, it’s that the process should soon lead to better results.
