College Football Insider Has Shocking Take On Potential Billy Napier Replacement at Florida

Midway through November, we are no closer to any of the college football openings being filled. There are a lot of rumors surrounding some of the openings, but no chips have started to fall.

When it comes to some of the top candidates, James Franklin is the most commonly mentioned because he was fired from Penn State. Most of the other names are tied to coaches who are currently coming down the stretch of their 2025 seasons.

One name that floats around several openings is Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin. He has been linked to SEC jobs such as Florida and LSU. His name will continue to pop up with openings, but one college football insider hinted at a potential huge move for Kiffin.

Josh Pate Hints At Potential Lane Kiffin Move to the NFL

College football insider Josh Pate joined The Colin Cowherd Podcast and mentioned that Kiffin could look to bolt to the NFL rather than another college job if he does leave Oxford.

“Several of them are,” Pate said. “I think there are some names considering the NFL that would totally and completely put jaws on the ground if the names ever got public. I think these guys are always considering the NFL. Now, you’d never get the truth out of most of them. But yeah, I think he would consider it. I think they actively consider it all the time.”

College coaches making the move to the NFL have not always worked out. There are already some NFL openings and more to come. The question will be, will any of them be enticing enough for Kiffin or someone else to make the jump?

“What I don’t know, and I think this is really what the decision comes down to, is… what do you personally value the most beyond football?” said Pate. “Like, some guys hate recruiting. They’re looking at the first exit door to get to the NFL. Others they think it’s their wheelhouse. They think that’s one of their strongest suits. They actually love being around young people.”

One NFL Opening Makes Sense For Lane Kiffin

If there is an NFL opening that might be appealing to Kiffin, it’s the New York Giants. Why? Well, Jaxson Dart, who is battling concussions, had taken over the job before getting injured. Kiffin had Dart at Ole Miss, and you would think the two of them reuniting in the NFL is too far-fetched.

“I think he is considering it,” Pate said about a move to the NFL for Kiffin.

If that is the path Kiffin takes, it would be a major blow to Florida, LSU, and any other opening that he is linked to. Ole Miss should make the 12-team College Football Playoff and has an opportunity to make a deep run. If they get into January, that could hamper the coaching cycle in college football.

The NFL seasons will be coming to a close in the first weekend in January, and jobs will open shortly after that. Whether it’s the Giants or someone else, expect Kiffin to get a call and have teams gauge his interest.
