Colts’ 3-Year Veteran Listed As Top Trade Candidate

The Indianapolis Colts are navigating a potentially significant roster decision — and it’s not at quarterback.

The team enters the final week of the preseason with questions at wide receiver, a trio of young quarterbacks, and one glaring question. Which weapons will define an offense led by Daniel Jones under center?

It’s late into the offseason, with Week 1 officially just days away. The Colts are on the verge of finalizing their 53-man depth chart, which allows them, like every NFL organization, to take one last look at their personnel.

Alec Pierce enters his fourth campaign in Indy, quietly emerging as one of the team’s most explosive wideouts. And other teams have taken notice throughout the offseason.

Pierce is rumored to be “on the trade block,” with potential interest growing from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Colts’ WR Outlook for 2025-26 Season

A key member of the Colts offense, Pierce’s current value could bring in a trade that helps the team’s future.

“I think I’ve continued to grow my game,” Pierce said in an August 17 press conference. “Show I can get open on different levels of the field, make plays at different levels, and just building chemistry with the quarterbacks.”

Last season, he led the league in yards per reception with 22.3, hauling in 37 catches for 824 yards and seven touchdowns. Any move would shake up the WR depth, and give Ashton Dulin, Josh Downs and Adonai Mitchell more targets, and a chance to elevate their game.

Pierce will hit free agency in 2026, so even if the Colts hold off on making a deal ahead of the regular season, he’ll be a name to watch leading up to the November 4 trade deadline if the Colts start slow.

Why He’s a Fit With Steelers

The potential availability of Pierce is tantalizing. With George Pickens traded to the Dallas Cowboys and DK Metcalf taking over as the Steelers’ WR1, the dearth of No. 2 options has forced Pittsburgh to shop around the league for a deep threat.

Pierce would slot perfectly with Metcalf’s physicality on the outside, giving Aaron Rodgers a complementary piece on early downs.

For the Colts, any decision involving Pierce is a delicate balance. His injury history is minor but still a factor, and he remains a crucial part of the vertical passing game. Trading him could yield draft capital and roster flexibility, but it would also force other receivers to step up immediately.

The Steelers will likely continue monitoring the status of Pierce as training camp comes to a close.
