Colts Add 9-Year Veteran To Practice Squad Ahead of 2025 Season

After 53-man roster cuts, one of the Indianapolis Colts’ decisions included bringing Laquon Treadwell back to the practice squad.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound veteran has seen the league from multiple angles since being a 2016 first-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings. He’s played with the Atlanta Falcons, Jacksonville Jaguars, Seattle Seahawks, Baltimore Ravens and now the Colts — appearing in 83 career games with 24 starts. Treadwell has 111 receptions for 1,242 yards and five touchdowns, along with four postseason appearances.

Shane Steichen and Reggie Wayne get another option behind their top talent. The move brings experience to a young receiver group headlined by Michael Pittman Jr., Josh Downs, Alec Pierce and Adonai Mitchell.

How Treadwell Impacts Colts

Treadwell showed during preseason he can still make an impact. In the finale against the Cincinnati Bengals, he put up six catches for 116 yards and a touchdown, proving he can create separation and finish plays. For a practice squad signing, that’s a decent splash. He totaled seven catches for 140 yards and one touchdown in the preseason.

Wide receiver depth has been an issue in recent years, especially when injuries stack up late in the season. Treadwell gives the team another proven option who won’t be overwhelmed by the moment if he’s asked to play meaningful snaps.

Colts Not Overlooking WR Depth

For a team that doesn’t want to overly rely on Jonathan Taylor in the running game as the All-Pro enters his sixth season with the Colts, establishing pass-catching weapons was paramount this offseason.

The Colts have talent in the WR room for 2025. They have a valuable trade option in Pierce, who’s contract expires at the end of the season. Downs has potential to distance himself from the pack, while Mitchell has a ton of burst and homerun playmaking ability. Ashton Dulin has also had an impressive training camp in spread packages and on special teams.

He also raises the bar in practice. Younger players competing for roles now have a veteran beside them who’s been through the grind of NFL training camps and regular seasons. That kind of presence can help keep the room sharp.

The Colts offensive staff values him for exactly that reason. Wayne and the rest of the group see him as a reliable pro who understands his role. He’s not walking in to push Pittman Jr. for targets, but he’s the type of receiver who stays ready and can produce when the team calls his number.
