Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen was named to the hot seat coming into the 2025 NFL season after a lackluster first two seasons with the organization and issues surrounding the quarterback position.
More drama surrounded the Colts, especially Steichen, when the team decided to sign Daniel Jones to compete for the starting quarterback job.
But the complete opposite has happened in Indianapolis. Steichen is currently leading the Colts to the best record in the NFL and has Jones playing like an MVP candidate.
With an 8-2 record and a potential franchise QB now in Steichen’s hands, the head coach has removed his name from the hot seat and secured his future in Indy.
Shane Steichen Candidate For Award?

Before becoming the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, Shane Steichen offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles for two seasons. In his two seasons in Philly, Steichen led the team to 26.1 points per game in the 2021 season and 28.1 in the 2022 season.
Sports Illustrated’s Mike Kadlick released a list of his top five coach of the year candidates after Week 10, with him ranking Steichen as the number one choice to win the award.
“The top spot on the list has to go to Shane Steichen, whose Colts shockingly hold onto
the AFC’s No. 1 seed through the first 10 weeks of the season,” Kadlick wrote. “Steichen has been crucial in the redevelopment Daniel Jones, another scrapheap quarterback, while helping lead the Indianapolis offense to a league-leading 32.1 points and 396.9 yards per game.”
“Defensively, Indy still has room to improve (the addition of Sauce Gardner should help), but overall, the Colts’ 2025 turnaround has been arguably the league’s most impressive, and Steichen deserves the credit-and perhaps an award at season’s end-for leading the charge.”
From worrying about losing his job to becoming a Coach of the Year candidate demonstrates how much Steichen has transformed Indianapolis in the matter of a season.
There are still eight more weeks in the season, but if Steichen and the Colts continue to hold their form, he will likely be one of the more serious candidates to win the award.
The last Indianapolis Colts head coach to win the Coach of the Year award was Bruce Arians back in the 2012 season.
Reviving Daniel Jones Career

The man making all the magic happen on the field is Daniel Jones, who signed with Indianapolis on a one-year, $14 million contract.
Jones was in a training camp battle with former fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft, Anthony Richardson, to become the player behind the center in Week 1. The former New York Giant won the job and is having a career year in the AFC South.
The quarterback is leading the league in passing yards and has the third-most rushing touchdowns by a QB. Jones is on track to have a career best in passing yards and passing touchdowns under Shane Steichen and offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter.
Jones was once ridiculed as a bust after his six seasons with the Giants. But a change of scenery did wonders for his career and could lead the Colts to become a legit Super Bowl contender.
