Colts Host Veteran OT With 25 Starts in Slew of Roster Workouts

The Indianapolis Colts are evaluating their options for adding more tackle depth — on both offense and defense — after the first few days of 2025 training camp.

According to the NFL’s official transaction wire for July 26, the Colts had seven players in for roster workouts on Saturday, including veteran offensive tackle Geron Christian.

The rest of the Colts’ workout list included offensive tackles Matt Nelson and Ricky Lee and defensive tackles Josiah Bronson, Bruce Hector, Anthonie Lattany and Josh Tupou.

While the Colts did not announce any signings following Saturday’s workouts, they may keep some of them on their short list of free agents as they progress further into camp.

Gervon Christian Has 25 Games of Staring Experience

While there are a few intriguing names among the Colts’ recent workouts, Christian is the most compelling as a veteran with 25 career starts at tackle on his NFL resume.

Christian, the No. 78 overall pick in 2018, has appeared in 63 career games over his seven seasons in the league. While he started in eight games over his first three years with Washington, he found a more substantial role with the Houston Texans in 2021, when he started eight games and played 588 offensive snaps at left tackle.

In the three seasons since, Christian has bounced between six teams but primarily held a depth role. He did, however, start a career-high nine games for the Cleveland Browns in 2023, giving the Colts some recent starter tape to evaluate in addition to his workout.

If the Colts did sign Christian, he would most likely be vying for a practice-squad role with the team throughout camp. The Colts have Bernhard Raimann and Braden Smith penciled in as their returning starters, while Blake Freeland and rookie Jalen Travis — both recent fourth-round picks for the team — are the projected backups behind them.

That said, the Colts might like the idea of adding more experience and veteran wisdom to their tackle position, given how young most of their roster hopefuls are. They have just three other offensive tackles in the mix, and all three — Jack Wilson, Luke Tenuta and rookie Marshall Foerner — have three or fewer seasons of experience in the NFL.

Colts May Want More Competition Behind DT Starters

Offense was not the only focus of the Colts’ workout group on Saturday.

The Colts also auditioned four defensive tackles, including three veterans, for roles on their 90-man camp roster, suggesting they might be looking to add more experience to the position and improve the competition for the unsettled depth spots on their roster.

Tupou, 6-foot-3, 350-pound boulder of a nose tackle, is the most distinguished among the workout players. He has made 23 career starts and appeared in 68 games over his seven active seasons — he sat out in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic — and most recently saw action in 2024 with Baltimore, recording one sack on 61 defensive snaps.

The Colts could also consider signing the rookie Lattany. He recorded 103 tackles with 11 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks in 45 career games for Wofford at the collegiate level. He is also on the lighter side compared with Tupou at just 310 pounds.

Either way, at least the Colts have their records now updated on free agents of interest.
