The Indianapolis Colts‘ sudden rise has been one of the biggest surprises in the 2025 campaign. From seemingly out of nowhere, the Colts have put together a historically efficient offense that has powered the team to an 8-2 record heading into a pivotal Week 12 matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Perhaps the two most pivotal players when it comes to the team’s newfound success are quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Jonathan Taylor. With both guys starring this year, Indianapolis’ front office is going to have some decisions to make when it comes to their respective contract situations moving forward. And yet, recent reports have offered a discouraging update on the team’s discussions with both of these guys.
Colts Not Discussing New Contracts with Daniel Jones, Jonathan Taylor
The duo of Jones and Taylor has taken the Colts to heights that nobody could have realistically expected entering the season. Jones was scooped up in free agency on a one-year, $14 million contract to be Anthony Richardson’s backup, but he ended up stealing the starting job from him. Taylor, on the other hand, has taken his game to another level after struggling to reach the heights he hit in his historic 2021 campaign.
Nobody was expecting both of these guys to put together MVP-caliber campaigns this year, but that’s precisely what has ended up happening. Jones has thrown for 2,659 yards and 15 touchdowns, while also rushing for 143 yards and five touchdowns. Taylor has been even better, as he’s leading the league in rushing yards (1,139) and rushing touchdowns (15) while also catching 30 passes for 260 yards and two more scores.
As is always the case in the NFL, big seasons often lead to big-money deals, and it seems like both Jones and Taylor are set to earn substantial raises in the near future. According to a recent report, though, it turns out that the Colts have yet to discuss new deals with either player, preferring to wait until after the season ends.
“As far as I can tell, it’s crickets when it comes to money talks,” Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reported on Indy’s contract talks with Jones and Taylor. “The Colts appear focused on this season rather than locking up these players mid-season for years to come, according to multiple sources. It makes sense on several levels, including not fraying any nerves when talking about value during what is clearly a special season.”
Will the Colts’ Contract Strategy Come Back to Bite Them?

Considering how the Colts could only apply the franchise tag to one of these players if they needed to, waiting to hammer out these deals is a bit of a risk. Both of these guys aren’t going to hit the open market, but once the season ends, the front office is going to be in a bit of time crunch when it comes to finding a way to hammer out two big new contracts before free agency gets underway.
Waiting could be costly, but Indianapolis doesn’t want any distractions when it comes to its standout season. The team knows something special is brewing, but for now, the focus is on winning football games, not sorting out contract situations. With that in mind, the Colts will be intent on finding a way to grind out a victory in Week 12 against the Kansas City Chiefs.
