Commanders Ex-Starter Named Possible Trade Candidate With NFL Deadline Approaching

The Washington Commanders appeared to find a diamond in the rough with offensive lineman Brandon Coleman in the 2024 NFL Draft. Coleman played right away as a rookie and entered the starting lineup for the Commanders by Week 5 last season.

But a year later, Coleman might hold his most value for Washington on the trade market.

Commanders insider Ben Standig has hyped the 25-year-old lineman as a potential trade candidate this fall. The NFL trade deadline, which is at 4 pm ET on November 4, is quickly approaching.

“Coleman, last season’s primary left tackle and opening game starting left guard, has not played since the Week 2 loss at Green Bay. Scratch that. The 2024 third-round pick has not been active in the three games following a shaky performance against the Packers,” wrote Standig.

“It is fair to wonder if the front office that traded 2022 first-round WR Jahan Dotson and last season’s leading rusher Brian Robinson while on their rookie contracts, and lacks significant 2026 draft capital, considers moving a young, athletically imposing lineman that’s fallen down the depth chart.”

Coleman has started 14 games in Washington over two years. Of those starts, 12 of them came last season.

After starting in the season opener and Week 2 this year, though, Coleman has been a healthy scratch.

The Commanders drafted Coleman at No. 67 overall in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Could Commanders Trade Lineman Brandon Coleman?

Standig essentially proposed this question himself.

Normally, the answer would likely be a resounding no. But as Standig pointed out, the Commanders have been aggressive in parting with players still on rookie deals if they don’t fit in the team’s future plans.

Coleman could qualify since he hasn’t even dressed since Week 2.

Benched players don’t often yield a lot on the trade market. But if the Commanders are trying to land a rental player, then perhaps a non-contender will be willing to roll the dice on Coleman instead of a late-round draft pick.

According to the Pro Football Focus player grades, Coleman was inconsistent as a rookie. Overall, he posted a 59.7 player grade. Coleman submitted a 62.4 run blocking grade and 55.4 pass protection grade.

Based on PFF’s rating system, Coleman regressed in a new position over two games to begin this year. He particularly struggled in pass protection, posting a 33.9 grade.

Coleman played 998 snaps at left tackle last season. He also had a single snap at right tackle.

In the first two weeks of 2025, Coleman played all 128 of his offensive snaps at left guard.
