Commanders Get Major Update on Terry McLaurin Injury Timeline

NFL insider Jeremy Fowler confirmed on Saturday morning that Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin will not be placed on injured reserve, and that the team is labeling his quad injury as a “week-to-week” situation.

McLaurin injured his quad in the Commanders 41-24 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, when he was tackled at the one-yard line. McLaurin was listed as a DNP in each of the Commanders practices leading into week four and has officially been ruled out for Sunday’s contest against the Atlanta Falcons.

NFL insider Mike Garofolo gave more context to the McLaurin injury:

“I mean, it’s sort of moving around here, and Ian Rapoport, our colleague, reported that he went to see Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia, the core muscle specialist,” Garafolo said. “I know a lot of people say, ‘Once you go to Dr. Meyers, you’re getting surgery from Dr. Meyers.’ Well, my understanding is there will be no surgery, or at least, not right as of now. So, that is a little bit of good news on Terry McLaurin because any type of core muscle surgery, you’re taking anywhere from 6-8 weeks. So, that’s not in the cards as of right now.”

McLaurin has 10 receptions for 149 yards through three weeks.

Marcus Mariota To Start For Second Straight Week

The Commanders will also be without their star quarterback Jayden Daniels in week four. Daniels suffered a knee injury in week two and missed the week three victory. It’s a minor ailment for Daniels who was pushing to be ready for week four, but as a mobile quarterback, Washington is playing it safe with him and giving him ample time to get back to 100%.

Marcus Mariota will man the helm for Washington for the second week in a row in Daniels’ absence. Mariota completed 15-of-21 passes in week three for 207 yards and a touchdown, while picking up 40 yards on the ground. His play style as a dual-threat quarterback – albeit not at the level of Daniels – fits into the Commanders offensive scheme perfectly, as they already have their playbook drawn up for a running QB.

Mariota has been the NFL’s resident roaming backup QB for the last five seasons, splitting time between Las Vegas, Atlanta, Philadelphia and now Washington after his career as a starter flamed out in Tennessee.

Commanders Look To Improve To 3-1 Against Embattled Falcons

After making it to the NFC Championship in 2024, Washington has it’s sights set on another deep run this season. In times like this where their two star players are out, the Commanders just need to hold serve as they wait for Daniels and McLaurin to return.

They have a great opportunity to pick up their third win of the season with the Falcons on the slate for Sunday. Atlanta is coming off of a brutal 30-0 defeat at the hands of the Carolina Panthers in week three, where Michael Penix Jr. was benched late for Kirk Cousins.

Falcons coach Raheem Morris stood firm that Penix is still the Falcons starting QB, but the second year starter hasn’t shown much to prove that he is a true NFL QB1 this season. This sets the Commanders up for success in week three against a team that is facing plenty of internal turmoil.
