Commanders Hit With More ‘Tough News’ as $7 Million Rookie ‘Out for a While’

The Washington Commanders just can’t seem to catch a break. After suffering a string of injuries and tough losses, the team received more devastating news this week — rookie cornerback Trey Amos will be “out for a while” after fracturing his fibula during Washington’s 44-22 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

The injury is another major blow to the Commanders’ defense that has been decimated by injuries over the past several weeks. Head coach Dan Quinn confirmed the bad news during his Monday press conference, calling it “tough news” for both Amos and the team.

Amos, Washington’s second-round draft pick in 2025, was carted off the field in the first half after initially being listed as questionable to return with an ankle injury. He was later downgraded to out before halftime.

Trey Amos Injury Adds to Commanders’ Growing Defensive Crisis

Amos’ rookie season had been promising before the setback. In his limited action on Sunday, the 6-foot-1 cornerback recorded two solo tackles, bringing his season total to 17 solo tackles and six pass deflections. During his final collegiate season at Ole Miss in 2024, Amos made a name for himself with 39 solo tackles, 13 pass deflections, and three interceptions, earning All-SEC honors.

Unfortunately, Washington’s defensive depth continues to thin out. The Commanders have already lost Marshon Lattimore, who was placed on injured reserve last week after tearing his ACL against the Seattle Seahawks. Defensive ends Deatrich Wise Jr., Javontae Jean-Baptiste, Drake Jackson, and Dorance Armstrong are also sidelined, along with safety Will Harris.

The Commanders are scheduled to travel to Madrid for their Week 11 matchup against the Miami Dolphins, but the injury list — and off-field distractions — continue to grow. Quarterback Jayden Daniels is not expected to travel as he recovers from an elbow dislocation, while star receiver Terry McLaurin will make the trip, but not play, as part of his recovery process.

Adding to the chaos, defensive tackle Daron Payne has been suspended for one game without pay after striking Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown following a touchdown celebration. Quinn confirmed Payne is appealing the suspension in hopes of having it reduced to a fine so he can play in Spain.

Trey Amos Was Considered a ‘Best Value’ Pick in the 2025 NFL Draft

Before the setback, Amos had been viewed as one of Washington’s most promising young defenders. The Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski called Amos one of the “best value” selections of the 2025 NFL Draft, especially after signing a four-year, $7.2 million rookie contract.

“This year’s 61st overall draft pick is a physical 6-foot-1, 195-pound man-press corner who can immediately slot into the starting lineup,” Sobleski wrote. “Plenty of buzz existed prior to the draft that identified Amos as a late first-round possibility. Obviously, that scenario didn’t come to fruition. But the Commanders should be thrilled he was still on the board during the latter portion of the second frame because he fits nicely opposite Marshon Lattimore.”

Amos had raised concerns among some teams prior to the draft due to a back issue discovered during medical evaluations. However, Quinn confirmed the Commanders were “comfortable with” the medical reports before selecting him.

“Quinn confirmed an ESPN report that a back issue popped up for teams during Amos’ pre-draft evaluations,” The Athletic’s Ben Standig reported in May. “Considered a potential first-round pick, the first-team All-SEC selection slipped to Washington at No. 61.”
