Commanders Make Critical Decision On NFL All-Pro for Week 2 Showdown

The Washington Commanders got a surprising lift ahead of their prime time Week 2 matchup against the Green Bay Packers after a special teams ace ended up on the active roster in what came down to a game day decision.

The Commanders put 6 players on their list of inactives released 90 minutes before kickoff but left off punter Tress Way, who had been battling a back injury suffered in Week 1 against the New York Giants.

Way went through a workout with head coach Dan Quinn at Lambeau Field several hours before kickoff.

“Tress Way gets in some pregame punts and gives a double thumbs up before a brief chat with Dan Quinn,” NBC 4 Sports wrote on its official X account several hours before kickoff. “Way was on the injury report this week (back) after taking a hit vs. NY Backup punter elevated earlier today from practice squad.”

Way is in his 12th season with the Commanders and playing on a 1-year, $2.75 million contract extension he signed on March 10. He’s also a 2-time Pro Bowler, earned NFL All-Pro honors in 2019 and has $25.2 million in career earnings.

The 6 players on the inactive roster released September 11 were running back Chris Rodriguez, linebacker Ale Kaho, linebacker Kain Medrano, offensive tackle Trent Scott and offensive tackle George Fant and punter Mitch Wishnowsky.

From Commanders.com: on September 10 “Way has been on the injury report since he suffered a back injury against the New York Giants in Week 1. He did not participate in Monday’s walkthrough but did kick on Tuesday and Wednesday. The concern for his availability against the Packers is low, but the team still signed punter Mitch Wishnowsky to the practice squad to be elevated as a backup.”

Wise was a Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots following the 2018 season and played his first 8 seasons there before signing a 1-year, $3.25 million contract with the Commanders on March 10.

How To Watch And Stream Packers-Commanders

Here’s everything you need to know to watch the Thursday Night Football game between the Commanders and Packers.

Battle Between Superstars & Super Bowl Contenders

While the game will be a battle between Super Bowl contenders, the main matchup anyone will be watching will be Packers edge rusher Micah Parsons trying to chase down Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, who split a pair of games with Parsons and the Cowboys as a rookie in 2024.

Parsons, 26 years old, is a 3-time NFL All-Pro and one of just 2 players in NFL history to have at least 12.0 sacks in each of their first 4 NFL seasons alongside Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive end Reggie White.

Parsons was traded to the Packers on August 28 in exchange for 2 first round picks and 2-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark in one of the biggest blockbuster trades in NFL history.

Daniels, 24 years old, was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft and led the Commanders to a 12-5 regular season record and the NFC Championship Game for the first time since 1991. He also set the NFL rookie quarterback rushing record, won NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and was elected to the Pro Bowl.
