After making it all the way to the NFC Championship Game in 2024, it’s safe to say that things have not gone according to plan for the Washington Commanders in the 2025 campaign. With the team currently enjoying its bye week after suffering a 16-13 loss to the Miami Dolphins in Week 11, its playoff hopes are all but gone, thanks to their 3-8 record.
The time off is a welcome sight for the Commanders, as they had to make the trek to Madrid, Spain, for their crushing overtime loss to the Dolphins last weekend. And according to a recent report, it doesn’t sound like Washington will have to wait very long to make its return to Spain, as a big announcement was made regarding the team’s 2026 schedule.
Commanders to Play in Madrid, Spain Again in 2026
Anytime you come one game away from reaching the Super Bowl, expectations are going to be high for the upcoming campaign. With Jayden Daniels appearing to be a budding superstar, and the front office doing well to reinforce the roster around him on both sides of the ball, the Commanders entered the year with championship hopes.
As their 3-8 record indicates, though, virtually nothing has gone this team’s way. Injuries have prevented Washington from ever truly fielding its preferred 11 players on either offense or defense, and even when it has been relatively healthy, an unforgiving schedule hasn’t helped matters much.
The Commanders’ last real shot at salvaging their season came in Week 11 against the Dolphins, but they could not get the job done. It led to a sobering trip home, as Washington struggled to put on much of a show for its international fanbase. The team will get another opportunity to make an impression on Spain in the near future, though, as it sounds like they will be the designated home team for a game in Madrid in 2026.
“After traveling to Madrid this season as the visiting team in the NFL’s first game in Spain, Washington will be the designated home team in another international game in 2026, Commanders President Mark Clouse told The Athletic,” Nicki Jhabvala reported on Friday.

Washington hasn’t been officially eliminated from playoff contention yet, but it would need several different miracles in order to just have a shot at earning a wild-card spot. With so much bad news dominating the team’s season, it was nice to get some good news about the team earning another international game, as these contests help broaden the participating teams’ fanbases across the globe.
In the present, the Commanders are hoping to get a little bit healthier during their bye week, as they look to finish out what has been a miserable season so far on a high note. Things won’t get much easier for Washington when it returns to action, though, as a difficult contest against the Baltimore Ravens looms. With this game being scheduled for Sunday Night Football, kickoff is set for 8:20 p.m. ET on Nov. 30.
