Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury Is Perfect Fit for AFC South HC Job

There’s one aspect that comes with running an NFL team that might seem pretty unsavory but is necessary at times — especially in turmoil.

That aspect is telling the public one thing and doing another.

Take the Tennessee Titans, for example. The worst team in the NFL from one year ago is 0-3 to start the season and appears on track to be the worst team again this year. They’re bad enough that head coach Brian Callahan is already having to deny the team is in the midst of an early season fire sale after trading starting cornerback Jarvis Brownlee to the New York Jets.

“I don’t think so,” Callahan told ESPN’s Turron Davenport on September 24. “That was a one-off situation unique to what it was. There’s front offices around the league from now until the deadline that call everybody in football, and they are all looking for different things. So I can’t say whether or not there’ll be something more or nothing more. It’s hard for me to make any predictions about that or stake any statements about it.”

Those, my friends, are the words of an NFL head coach who might be in his last days, weeks and months of employment. That means it’s fair to start guessing who might be the next head coach for the Titans and who might be the best fit to guide the career of quarterback and No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward moving forward.

The perfect candidate isn’t hard to find.

Why Kingsbury Is Perfect Fit For Titans

There is no head coaching candidate who would be better for the Titans than current Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, who turned down an opportunity to interview with the New Orleans Saints for their head coach opening after last season.

Almost Kingsbury’s entire career has been built on working with and developing elite quarterbacks.

Kingsbury had his own career as a record setting quarterback at Texas Tech in the early 2000s followed by 5 season as a pro quarterback in the NFL, NFL Europe and Canadian Football League before his coaching career took off like a rocket.

Almost everywhere Kingsbury has went, quarterbacks have followed with success on an almost ethereal plane.

First, as an offensive coordinator with the University of Houston and Case Keenum, who set multiple NCAA passing records with Kingsbury. Then, as an offensive coordinator with Texas A&M with Johnny Manziel, who became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy in 2012.

Back at Texas Tech as head coach, he coached another Heisman winner in Baker Mayfield — although not with Kingsbury and the Red Raiders — followed by his most resounding success with 2-time NFL MVP and 3-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes.

Ward, Kingsbury Could Be Electric Together

With Ward, the thought is he and Kingbury could emulate the success he’s had in Washington with 2024 No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels.

Under Kingsbury’s tutelage, Daniels was not only the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2024 but one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks from the jump, leading the Commanders to the NFC Championship Game for the first time since 1991.

That’s the kind of success Ward and the Titans, who haven’t had a winning season since 2021, would kill for right now.
