Cowboys Chasing Trades for 3 Top Defensive Stars Before Deadline

It’s no secret that, coming into Week 9 of the NFL season, with the Cowboys standing at an uninspiring and entirely inconsistent 3-4-1, Dallas owner Jerry Jones was intent on being aggressive at the NFL trade deadline, which will come quickly on Tuesday afternoon. But more than just being aggressive, it appears as though the Cowboys honcho is swinging for just about any fence he sees as in reach.

In fact, Jones is so confident in his ability to get a deal done to help the ailing Cowboys defense, which allowed 10 points in the first 18 minutes to the Cardinals on Monday night, that he announced on Monday afternoon that a deal had been completed–though he would not say which player was involved or what was given up.

“A lot of action going on right now in terms of trading. We certainly have made a trade and we may make a couple more trades before that deadline,” Jones told Stephen A. Smith on Sirius/XM. “We’ve made one. We possibly could make two more, and I’m going to wait and let you read about that when we send the papers in tomorrow.”

Cowboys Trade Deadline Still Murky

It’s worth noting that the Cowboys have not made any deals official just yet, and that Jones was certain he had a contract agreement with Micah Parsons before that fell through. So take his personal declarations of trades having been consummated with a grain of salt.

But, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Cowboys are cooking and could bolster the defense with more than one addition before Tuesday afternoon.

Writes Schultz on Twitter/X: “My understanding is the #Cowboys have spoken to the Bengals on DE Trey Hendrickson and LB Logan Wilson, and to the Dolphins on OLB Bradley Chubb. They’ve had talks with other teams as well.

“‘At least one deal is getting done somewhere,’ a source said.”

Cowboys After Trey Hendrickson?

Also worth mentioning is the fact that Schultz’s source is pretty much just repeating what Jones said very publicly. But the names–Hendrickson, Wilson and Chubb–are worth noting because it has been previously reported that the Cowboys have had talks about Hendrickson, who was the 2024 NFL sack leader but was unable to come to terms on a new deal with the Bengals.

Hendrickson is likely the highest impact player with a chance to move on Tuesday, but reports have it that the Bengals won’t budge for less than a first-rounder. With Hendrickson heading to free agency, that appears too steep a price to pay.

Chubb, the former Broncos Pro Bowler, suffered a torn ACL last season but still has 4.0 sacks in nine games for the Dolphins.

Possibly the most realistic option for the Cowboys remains Wilson, who has talent, has lost his role with the Bengals and would fill a major hole in the Cowboys’ depth chart.

NFL Trade Deadline Hits Tuesday Afternoon

As for the impending transaction, ESPN’s Adam Schefter acknowledged on Monday that Jones told Smith he had a deal done, but Schefter offered no further details on the move, either. He reiterated, though, that the Cowboys are looking for defensive help

Said Schefter: “Obviously, the Dallas Cowboys looking for some defensive help, and that is the expectation, that by Tuesday, the deadline, the Cowboys will be able to pull off at least one trade. They’re having discussions about other deals, but Dallas is in the market to upgrade the defense.”
