Cowboys Get Big Update on DT Perrion Winfrey

Perrion Winfrey could be nearing a return for the Dallas Cowboys.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Wednesday the Cowboys have opened the 21-day practice window for the 25-year-old defensive tackle, who has yet to play this season because of a back injury.

Winfrey, a 2022 fourth-round pick out of Oklahoma, has 21 days to be added to the Cowboys’ active roster before reverting to injured reserve.

The Cowboys (3-4-1) host the Arizona Cardinals on Monday night.

Winfrey Has Been Sidelined Since Late August

The UFL star had a strong training camp and preseason with Dallas but hurt his back during practice on Aug. 31 in anticipation for the regular season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. He was inactive for the Week 1 loss, and the Cowboys placed him on IR a few days later.

Winfrey is now eligible to begin practicing with the Cowboys and can be activated at any point over the next three weeks. If he is not moved to the 53-man roster by the end of that window, his season will essentially be over.

The decision comes on the heels of the Cowboys activating the practice windows for linebacker DeMarvion Overshown and rookie cornerback Shavon Revel. Both could be big additions for a defense that ranks 31st in both scoring and yards per game.

Winfrey Was a Surprise Preseason Performer

Cowboys fans may remember the rollercoaster of emotions that Winfrey experienced late in the summer before cutdown day.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer told the team’s website about how he surprised Winfrey with the news he’d made the team.

“We brought Perrion Winfrey in, and he assumed he was being cut,” Schottenheimer recalled. “And so he walked in and sat down in my office, and (vice president of player personnel) Will McClay was in there. I did play it up a little bit. …

“He became very emotional, and then I became emotional. I looked over at McClay and he had become emotional. Talk about a guy that’s had this amazing game taken away from him, and you really realize how much these players love this game, what they sacrifice to play this game and what they have to give up and go through — the pounding it takes on their bodies.”
