Cowboys Get Double Dose of Bad Injury News Before Facing Lions

The Dallas Cowboys are in the part of the regular season where almost everyone on the roster is dealing with some sort of nagging issue. Nobody is 100 percent at this point of the year.

For the Cowboys, that’s going to mean going without 2 key pieces on both sides of the ball in a critical, Week 14 road game against the Detroit Lions on Thursday Night Football … and getting good news about one player who they might not be able to win without.

“The Cowboys have ruled out OT Tyler Guyton (high-ankle) and CB Trevon Diggs (knee) for TNF against the Lions,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport wrote on his official X account on Wednesday, December 3. “But WR George Pickens (calf/knee) is good to go.”

Guyton, a 2024 first round pick, injured his ankle in a Week 12 win over the Philadelphia Eagles and missed his team’s Thanksgiving Day win over the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 13.

It will be the seventh consecutive game for the Cowboys without Diggs, who suffered a concussion in a mysterious “accident at home” in October that also aggravated a previous knee injury and landed him on injured reserve.

While the Cowboys have picked up the slack with Guyton out with backup Nate Thomas filling in, they’ve gotten a big boost on defense with Diggs missing from rookie cornerback Shavon Revel the last 3 games.

Not having Pickens would have been the biggest blow for the Cowboys.

Obtained in exchange for a third round pick in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers in May, Pickens has been one of the NFL’s elite wide receivers in his first year with the Cowboys.

Through 12 games, Pickens is second in the NFL in receiving with 73 receptions for 1,142 yards and 8 touchdowns.

The Cowboys have won 3 consecutive games and are currently 6-5-1 overall with a 21 percent chance of making the playoffs, according to NFL.com.

Diggs Market Corrected by Rookie CB?

While there’s little risk of Guyton losing his job to Thomas, Diggs could very well find himself on the outside looking in when he comes back. That’s because of the standout play of Revel, who didn’t make his NFL debut until a Week 11 win over the Las Vegas Raiders as he recovered from ACL surgery.

In 3 games for the Cowboys — all wins — Revel has shown he might have what it takes to be the team’s next elite cornerback. Kind of like Diggs was early in his career, when he earned NFL All-Pro honors in 2021 and was a 2-time Pro Bowler.

“He continues to amaze me, man,” Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer told The Dallas Morning News reporter Joseph Hoyt. “It’s so fun to watch him grow.”

Revel has been thrown directly into the fire in his first 3 games — including 1 start — as he’s been on the field for 64 percent of the defensive plays for the Cowboys.

“Cowboys rookie CB Shavon Revel Jr. has allowed just five receptions for 61 yards across 89 coverage snaps in the first three games of his NFL career,” The Fort Worth Star Telegram’s Nick Harris wrote on his official X account on December 2.
