The Dallas Cowboys‘ moving on from Micah Parsons never made much sense, but while the team did that, and it can’t be undone, there have to be some positives to take away from it.Â
Ultimately, the Cowboys shouldâve done whatever they couldâve to keep Parsons in town, but they now have some draft assets to work with if they want to make a blockbuster deal in the future.Â
According to Jerry Jones, as reported on the team website, he’s open for business right now and believes that his team is in a position to make those moves due to the way it has played over the first five weeks of the season.Â
“I think that old sign is out, ‘Open for Business,’ is there. I think that we are continually looking. As we go on into this season, teams will position themselves where they basically feel like less of a contender because of the losses or because of circumstance on their team.” Jones said.
“That’s when you’ll see sometimes some better players that are available because the team has decided to start redoing some things on their salary cap structure, for instance. There’s opportunity there, and that’s when you start getting those calls. And yes, we’re in a position to improve our team if we get an opportunity to.”
Will the Cowboys Be Buyers at Trade Deadline?
The Dallas Cowboys currently sit at 2-2-1, so being guaranteed buyers at the deadline might not be true yet. However, the Cowboys have shown some impressive signs for parts of the year, and with a contest against the Carolina Panthers coming up on Sunday, as well as a few other easier games in the next five weeks, there’s a possibility for them to be over .500 and in a position to contend.Â
When discussing what he planned to do with the assets he received from the Parsons deal a few weeks ago, Jones confirmed that he’s ready to buy if the right opportunity arises.Â
“Well, of course, to use that capital, youâve got to have the opportunity to use it. And frankly, no matter what I had seen in these first three ball games, if I had the opportunity to really do some good with those picks, I would do it. And weâve got them, and thatâs one of the advantages for, if you will, making the trade,” Jones said, per The Athletic’s Jon Machota.
The Cowboys Have Assets to Trade
There are a few scenarios that Jones must consider when he attempts to make a deal using some of the picks that he landed for the Dallas Cowboys in the Parsons trade. For one, the chances of getting a player of Parsonsâ status are probably below zero, unless they can make a blockbuster deal with another team.Â
He also can’t use those picks just to move them, as the Cowboys could use those picks in the future to draft cheaper, younger players.Â
“Youâve got to have something that comes your way thatâs really special,” continued Jones. “And if youâve got the currency to do it, which in this case it would be draft picks, weâll do it.”
Nonetheless, it’s a promising sign to hear that the Cowboys are considering buying at the moment, even if there have been some challenging moments throughout the year.
