Cowboys Legend Troy Aikman Takes Shot at Jerry Jones Over Matt Eberflus Comments

Things haven’t gone as planned for the Dallas Cowboys during the 2025 NFL season, as they haven’t lived up to expectations, despite having a formidable offense led by veteran quarterback Dak Prescott.

The defense has been a major problem for the Cowboys this season, as they haven’t been able to recover from trading superstar linebacker Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers before the start of the 2025 campaign. Dallas simply can’t contain opposing offenses, which is the primary reason the team has struggled and will almost certainly miss the NFL playoffs.

With the defense being a problem that needs to be addressed during the offseason, defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus is on the hot seat right now, prompting some interesting comments from longtime team owner and general manager Jerry Jones.

Everyone knows that Jones never shies away from a microphone when approached by the media, regardless of the topic, which often opens him up to criticism. Jones basically put Eberflus on notice heading into the final three games of the regular season for the Cowboys, via Jon Machota of The Athletic.

“The adjustments that we should be making (defensively) should be with these next three games in mind,” Jones said. “With three games left in the short time that we’ve got to play them in, then that will impact any adjustments that you make regarding coaching with the time frame we’re dealing with. That’s a legit question.”

The comments made by Jones about the defense and Eberflus sparked a reaction from Cowboys legend Troy Aikman, who is also not afraid to speak his mind, even when it comes to criticizing his former boss in Dallas, as he said the following on 1310 The Ticket, via The Dallas Morning News.

“As far as Matt Eberflus, the only one I’ve heard comment on that is Jerry Jones,” he said. “And I’d like to hear what Brian Schottenheimer has to say about it. I’d rather, in fact, it be Brian Schottenheimer who’s talking about, we’re going to evaluate over the next three weeks, not only the defensive coordinator, but all of the coaching positions, and then make a decision on what he wants to do, as opposed to what the general manager wants to do.

“So that’s concerning to me. It’s not a surprise to anybody, but I would rather be hearing from Brian Schottenheimer as the head coach as far as what his staff may or may not look like a year from now.”

Clearly, Aikman is a bit tired of hearing Jones’ thoughts rather than those of others within the organization, such as head coach Brian Schottenheimer.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens when the offseason rolls around for the Cowboys, but it does seem like the writing is on the wall in Dallas.

Eberflus, who was the head coach of the Chicago Bears last season, will have to make the adjustment of leading the defense from the booth rather than on the field moving forward, which he addressed on Thursday.

Only time will tell what the future holds for Eberflus, but it’s safe to say he’s coaching for his job in these final three regular-season games.
