Cowboys Linked to Alabama Legend Nick Saban to Replace Schottenheimer

There have been rumors circulating that former Alabama legend Nick Saban, who also coached the Miami Dolphins in the NFL for a few years, could eventually return to coaching.

According to former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy, people believe that Saban could return to the field in the next few years, and there’s reason to think that he’d come to the NFL because of the NIL situation in college football.

“A very much in the know person that I have a lot of respect for and have spent a lot of time around, and just really, really admire — they seem to think Nick Saban is not done coaching,” McElroy said. “He’s pretty adamant that he thinks Nick Saban will be coaching again.”

After examining potential landing spots for Saban following comments from McElroy and others, Sportsnaut linked him to the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys have a first-year head coach with Brian Schottenheimer, but if there’s one thing Jerry Jones has shown in the past, it’s that he’s unpredictable. Perhaps Jones wouldn’t want to fire a first-year head coach instantly, but crazier has certainly happened around the NFL.

“The idea of Saban going to the Dallas Cowboys would seem far-fetched. But this week, NFL insider Albert Breer suggested it’s possible when asked about the idea by Colin Cowherd. The Boys have the brand cache that would appeal to the coach, and are just a short plane flight away from home. Furthermore, in an era where NFL teams go one and done with head coaches all the time now, new coach Brian Shottenheimer is far from secure under owner Jerry Jones,” they wrote.

Would a Saban-Cowboys Pairing Make Sense?

If Saban wants to return to the NFL, the Dallas Cowboys would be one of the very few teams that make sense. He’d have an opportunity to coach a storied franchise, and considering what Saban has done throughout his career, that could entice him.

According to Colin Cowherd, Jones could also be interested in bringing in somebody like Saban to help with the young college guys.

“Got a little itch, and he’s not going to Jacksonville, but Brian Schottenheimer is over his skis, and Jerry Jones says, ‘I don’t want one of these NFL egos.’ He likes to hire guys where they feel like they owe him a little,” he said.

“And Jerry could go to Saban and go, ‘Okay, this Schottenheimer thing doesn’t work. Jayden Daniels and Jalen Hurts. I need a guy that knows college personnel.’”

Saban’s Previous Struggles in the NFL

Saban knows better than anyone what it takes to coach at the college level, but it wasn’t like his stint in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins was ideal.

During his time with the Dolphins, he went 15-17.

For a Miami fan base that was looking to win at a high level, similar to how Dallas Cowboys fans are, they weren’t happy with how things played out.

Ultimately, that was many years ago now, with Saban holding the job with the Dolphins back in 2005.

Whether he wants to return to coaching remains to be seen, but it makes sense if he wants to be in the NFL over college at this point.
