Cowboys RB Javonte Williams Opens Up on Returning to Denver to Face Broncos

The Dallas Cowboys picked up a much-needed blowout victory over the Washington Commanders in Week 7, pushing their record to 3-3-1 on the year. Once again, it was the Cowboys’ high-powered offense that led them to victory, and a guy who has continually played a big role in the team’s success so far this year is running back Javonte Williams.

After spending the first four seasons of his career with the Denver Broncos, Williams signed with Dallas in free agency over the offseason, and he is in the process of turning in the best year of his career. With a return to Denver in the cards for Williams in Week 8, the former second-round pick pulled back the curtain as he prepares to face off against his former squad.

Javonte Williams Looking Forward to Impending Denver Return

Despite starting just one game as a rookie in 2021, Williams racked up 903 yards and four touchdowns on the ground for the Broncos, while also catching 43 passes for 316 yards and three more scores. Williams unsurprisingly won the starting running back job in 2022, but he suffered tears to the ACL, LCL, and posterolateral corner in his knee, ending his season prematurely.

Williams returned in 2023, but over the ensuing two seasons, he didn’t look like the same player he was as a rookie, as he averaged below four yards per carry both years. Denver promptly decided to let Williams leave in free agency, with Dallas deciding to take a flier on him in hopes he could rediscover his prior form.

Sure enough, Williams has been a star for the Cowboys, as he has 592 yards and six touchdowns on the ground through seven games, while also catching 23 passes for 85 yards and another score. Williams is on a roll, and while he’s looking forward to playing against the Broncos, he shot down the notion that this game had any added importance for him.

“I’m just gonna go out there and play my game,” Williams said when asked if this would be a revenge game of sorts for him. “I’m gonna do what I’ve got to do and try to make plays for my teammates.”

Over the past three games, Williams has eclipsed the 100-yard mark on the ground twice, with both of those games leading to wins for the Cowboys. When Williams gets going on the ground, that makes an already dangerous Dallas passing attack even more lethal, so you can bet that offensive coordinator Klayton Adams is going to work on getting his star running back going early and often in this one.

However, having a big day against the Broncos’ stingy defense is going to be easier said than done, and nobody knows that better than Williams, as he got a first look at this unit for the first four years of his career. Kickoff for this game is scheduled for 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon, and if the Cowboys want any shot of pulling off an upset victory, they are going to need Williams to have a big day on the ground against his former squad.
