The Dallas Cowboys didn’t win their season-opening clash against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1, but there were several encouraging signs from the team’s performance. Heading into Week 2, there’s reason to believe that the Cowboys could exceed expectations in the 2025 campaign.
Even with the focus being on the current season, the front office still has an eye turned towards the future. That was clear when they handed one of their star players, guard Tyler Smith, a massive new contract extension on Saturday ahead of the team’s upcoming contest against the New York Giants.
Cowboys, Tyler Smith Agree to Four-Year, $96 Million Contract Extension
The Cowboys selected Smith with the No. 24 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, and the hope that he could become a key piece of their offensive line for the long-term future. Sure enough, it looks like he has managed to accomplish that after news of his massive new contract extension surfaced on Saturday afternoon.
Smith initially began his tenure with Dallas at left tackle, and while he was solid, the team liked his fit at guard better. With that in mind, they moved Smith to left guard, and he ended up enjoying a breakout campaign. Even though he missed three games, Smith still earned a Pro Bowl selection and All-Pro Second Team honors in 2023.
Last season, Smith was a Pro Bowler again, but he struggled to reach the same heights he hit the year before. Still, Smith is one of the top guards in the league, and that isn’t lost on the Cowboys. As a result, they handed him a huge four-year, $96 million contract extension that will keep him in town for the foreseeable future.
“Sources: The Cowboys and standout G Tyler Smith agreed to terms on a 4-year, $96M extension —$24M per year — to make him the NFL’s new highest-paid at his position,” Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported in a post on X. “Smith gets a whopping $81.2M guaranteed in a deal done by agents Joe Panos and Todd France at Athletes First.”

At only 24 years old, Smith is already a star, and he’s only just getting started, as he has tons of room to grow. Playing at left guard suits his game far better than left tackle, and with other young guys like Tyler Booker and Tyler Guyton playing alongside him, the Cowboys have a strong collection of young studs protecting Dak Prescott under center.
Much has been made of Dallas’ failed contract negotiation with Micah Parsons that led to him getting traded to the Green Bay Packers, but as the team showed in Week 1, they still have a lot of talent at their disposal. Now, they need that talent to start leading to wins, as the Cowboys will be looking to earn their first victory of the season when they square off against the Giants at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon.
