The Miami Dolphins were embarrassed on Sunday to the Daniel Jones-led Indianapolis Colts. Sure, Jones was excellent, but the Dolphins looked exactly like all of the offseason naysayers said they would. They were completely inept on many levels.
So, here come the media pitchforks. Fox Sports host Colin Cowherd pointed out the obvious to the Dolphins following the game.
“You have to clean out the building,” Cowherd said on the “Colin Cowherd Podcast.” “Tua has a lot of character, and I like him, but there’s nothing about this team I like.
“There’s a gap between the best GMs and the worst, and they are not a well-run operation. Miami fans are so funny—they get so angry when you’re critical. It’s like, ‘Guys, you could put the pompoms down.’”
Colin Cowherd doesn’t like anything about the Miami Dolphins
Sure, the Dolphins have some talent, that’s undeniable. It just depends on what you think of that talent and what it’s capable of overcoming. Is there so much skill that it can top team dysfunction? And, to be clear, there is plenty of team dysfunction and it starts at the top.
“They don’t draft well, and they overspend in free agency,” Cowherd added. “The Tyreek Hill situation is another example. When Andy Reid moves on from somebody and you have [Patrick] Mahomes, it’s a pretty good sign. But it comes with baggage.
“There are issues behind the scenes, and Tyreek has struggled with personal matters. Right now, other than Tua’s character, there’s nothing about Miami that I like.”
I guess we won’t ask him for his thoughts on the running back situation.
Maybe Colin Cowherd should rethink Tua’s character
Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was brutal in Sunday’s loss. He didn’t put points on the board until he threw a garbage 11-yard touchdown to running back De’Von Achane with 6:21 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Oh, it was 30-0 at that point.
Tua was 14-23 passing for a paltry 114 yards, the aforementioned touchdown pass, two interceptions and a fumble lost.
Time to take some responsibility as the leader of the team, right?
“I’m definitely curious to see, ‘I came in on Tuesday, I seen these guys on Tuesday last week. I want to see if the same guys are watching film on Tuesday’, I want to see how everyone goes about their process,” Tagovailoa said.
Head coach Mike McDaniel wanted to protect Tua in his post-game press conference, but it was pretty obvious that he was lousy.
“It was something that was left to be desired,” McDaniel said of Tagovailoa’s game. “It’s definitely not all on him. There’s just throws that I know he makes nine times out of 10, and he didn’t make them today. But that being said, it’s hard to play quarterback when you have surprise pressures … or you have people coming out the huddle the wrong way when they had been nailing it for a week-plus.”
Everyone has a bad game, and it’s only Week 1. While Tua’s performance was indeed cause for concern, I think I’d be more concerned that the guy who just signed a four-year, $212 million contract extension last offseason wants to see more from the guys around him.
