Even though the Kansas City Chiefs finished their game three days prior, quarterback Patrick Mahomes was still on Cris Collinsworth’s mind as he announced Sunday’s game between the Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers.
Collinsworth, one of the most vocal supporters of the Chiefs quarterback, was called out by booth partner Mike Tirico for his reference to Mahomes during the unrelated game on Sunday. The reference quickly went viral, with many fans pointing out Collinsworth’s regular references to Mahomes — and how he was finally called out for it.

Collinsworth dropped the reference to Mahomes during Sunday’s shootout between the Bears and 49ers, saying quarterback Brock Purdy was making plays that were reminiscent of the Chiefs quarterback.
“Brock Purdy was drafted when they were cleaning up the joint but here he goes, he’s cleaning up the Bears so far tonight,” Collinsworth said. “I mean, if this were Patrick Mahomes we’d be screaming, ‘Oh, Patrick Mahomes!’ I know I would be saying that. But that’s the way it works because he’s made those kind of plays all night long and just been carrying the 49ers.”
Collinsworth is often called out on social media for his references to Mahomes — especially in games not involving the Chiefs — and Tirico appreciated that Collinsworth acknowledged his bias toward the Chiefs quarterback.
“What I love about you is you still have your speed,” Tirico said. “Because you beat the internet to beating you up when you mentioned Mahomes.”
Cris Collinsworth Won’t See Patrick Mahomes for a While
Collinsworth may have to get by with vicarious praise for Mahomes for the near future. The Chiefs were eliminated from the playoffs more than three weeks ago, while Mahomes suffered a season-ending injury that could keep him out for some of the 2026 season as well.
The Chiefs quarterback already underwent surgery for a torn ACL and torn LCL. While ACL recovery can take as short as nine months, the other aspect of the injury could complicate the rehab time for Mahomes and push his return back into next season.
Mahomes took to social media to share his disappointment, thanking Chiefs fans for their support and vowing to return stronger.
“Donât know why this had to happen,” Mahomes wrote in a post on X. “And not going to lie [it] hurts. But all we can do now is Trust in God and attack every single day over and over again. Thank you Chiefs kingdom for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I Will be back stronger than ever.”
