The Chicago Cubs finally broke the ice during the 2025 season and took a nice step in the right direction. The National League Central club finished the season with a strong 92-70 record. With this, the Cubs got back into the playoffs for the first time since the 2020 season, which was undoubtedly a big deal.
The Cubs then faced off against the San Diego Padres in the MLB Wild Card round. This also proved to be a good part of the Cubs’ season, as they defeated the Padres in the series 2-1.
Yet, things did not go well for the Cubs in the NLDS against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubs lost their series to the Brewers 3-2, as they were unable to complete their reverse sweep, falling in game 5 to their National League Central rival.
Now, after getting back into the playoffs in 2025, the Cubs are looking to make some big moves this offseason. Due to this, the Cubs have been linked to an array of top free agents, and one of them is star infielder Alex Bregman.
Now, the Cubs have gotten a promising update on the possibility of them being the winners of the Bregman sweepstakes this winter.
Cubs Predicted to Sign Alex Bregman in Free Agency
In a recent article for USA Today, Gabe Lacques predicted where the top remaining MLB free agents will sign this offseason. When it came to Bregman, Lacques predicted that the three-time All-Star will end up landing with the Cubs.
“Even as Matt Shaw showed some viability in his rookie season, there’s still plenty of room for Bregman, whose 128 adjusted OPS would be a massive upgrade over Shaw’s 98. Hoerner’s potential departure would allow room for both on the dirt in 2027. And should Bregman land on the IL a couple times, as he did with the Red Sox, there’s admirable depth to cover for him. Besides, the Cubs could use another dawg,” Lacques wrote.
With the Cubs needing another impactful right-handed batter in their lineup, it would make all the sense in the world for them to make a major push for Bregman. It is no secret that they wanted to land him last offseason in free agency, and he would still have the potential to be a perfect fit in their lineup. Thus, it makes sense that Lacques is predicting the Cubs to be the lucky team that lands Bregman during this offseason.
The Cubs Have Plenty of Competition for Bregman
While the Cubs are being viewed as a prime landing spot for Bregman, there is no question that they have a lot of competition for his services. A handful of teams that have been linked to Bregman this offseason include the Boston Red Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks, Toronto Blue Jays, and Detroit Tigers.
When noting that Bregman is coming off his third career All-Star season and has hit at least 23 home runs five times in his career, it makes sense that there is a lot of interest in him this winter. It will be interesting to see if the Cubs can end up winning the sweepstakes from here.
