DC Embraces Calm and Control in Year Two with Commanders

Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. has never shied away from accountability. Entering his second season at the helm of the defense, he feels a new sense of confidence and balance. Last year was about laying the groundwork. This year, he believes the foundation is strong enough for him to refine his leadership style and let the defense grow under the guidance of his staff.

“A lot more comfortable, just understanding how to deal with managing the staff and allowing the staff to do their job. Not trying to be overbearing from that standpoint,” Whitt said. “And the focus on just making sure that we’re detailed, we’re structured with where we need to be, and allowing the coaches to coach.”

Whitt understands the importance of building a strong culture among his staff. That means trusting his assistants to take ownership while he provides the vision and framework. His approach allows for collaboration without micromanaging, which he admits created extra pressure in his first year.

The result is a calmer, more confident coordinator. Whitt feels at ease in his role, and his players have noticed the difference. His steadiness filters down through the staff and into the locker room, giving the defense a clear identity built on detail and accountability.

Maximizing Player Strengths

Beyond managing the staff, Whitt has emphasized tailoring his scheme to the skill sets of his players. His philosophy revolves around putting athletes in positions to succeed and minimizing situations that expose their weaknesses. It is an approach rooted in adaptability and awareness.

“I want to make sure I do a better job of what I’ve always done in the past is taking players and maximizing their skill set. So let’s make sure we put players in position to do what they do best and negate what they don’t do,” Whitt explained.

This season, Washington’s defense features a mix of veterans and young talent, each with unique strengths. Whitt sees his role as building a system that highlights those attributes. That means creating matchups for his safeties that accentuate their versatility or using his pass rushers in creative ways that allow them to generate pressure without being predictable.

For Whitt, it is about letting players play fast. If they trust the plan and understand their responsibilities, the results follow. “Make sure that we’re structured, we’re on time, we’re detailed out, the players understand what we’re doing, and then let’s go play fast,” he said.

A Calmer Command at the Helm

The difference between Whitt’s first year and his second is clear. In year one, he often felt the need to manage every detail himself. Now he relies on his staff’s expertise while maintaining the structure that keeps everything on track. That balance has created what he calls “more of a calmness in the building.”

Whitt’s growth in comfort could be the key to unlocking Washington’s defense. With his staff empowered and his players put in positions to thrive, the Commanders believe they can field a unit that competes with the league’s best.

As the season approaches, Whitt’s message is simple. Trust the structure, trust the preparation, and then let the defense play with speed and confidence. Year two is not about reinventing the system. It is about refining it and ensuring that every coach and every player is positioned to succeed.
