Demands Grow Louder to Bench Jets QB Justin Fields After Awful Browns Game

The New York Jets won their second game of the season on Sunday, November 10, against the Cleveland Browns. They accomplished that in spite of their starting quarterback, Justin Fields, who contributed an underwhelming performance.

Brent Sobleski of Bleacher Report’s top takeaway from the 27-20 victory was “It’s Tyrod Taylor Time in New York.”

“It’s not often a team on a two-game winning streak needs to make a change at quarterback. But when you’re the New York Jets, even good news comes with bad. When the Jets face the red-hot New England Patriots next week, veteran Tyrod Taylor needs to be under center,” Sobleski explained.

“Gang Green didn’t beat the Browns because of Justin Fields—they won in spite of him. The weather conditions were far from ideal, but the Jets QB completed just six of 11 passes for 54 yards, and it’s hardly the only time this season he has struggled as a passer. New York isn’t beating New England with 42 passing yards as a team,” Sobleski wrote emphatically.

Jets Make Rare History in Win Over Cleveland

“The Jets finished with 42 net passing yards, the fewest by any team in a win since Week 18 of the 2022 season (Carolina Panthers). Fields (6-for-11, 54 yards) completed only two passes beyond the line of scrimmage,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini revealed in a column on Sunday, November 9.

Only having 54 yards is bad. It could have been much worse.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Fields hit running back Breece Hall on a screen play that he took 42 yards to the house. That technically counts as a pass and was added to Fields’ totals.

“If you take this play away, Justin Fields finished the game with 12 passing yards. I’m not even joking,” a social media user posted.

That is also bad, but if you look deeper, it is even worse than that. If you take away that screen play, Fields would have finished with zero net passing yards.

Net passing yards are calculated by taking your passing yards and subtracting the yards you lost whenever you were sacked. Fields had 12 passing yards (when not counting this screen play), and he was sacked three times for a loss of 12 yards. In other words, he would have had zero net passing yards.

That is almost impressive to pull off in 2025.

Jets Made Other History and Not the Good Kind

Garrett Wilson was targeted three times in Week 10, but failed to have a single catch. That was the first time in the former Ohio State product’s career that had ever happened.

To make matters worse, Wilson re-injured the same knee that caused him problems earlier this season. He didn’t return to the game.

There Aren’t a Lot of Great Options

The Jets have a short time to enjoy the sweet taste of victory. Up next for the Jets is a road trip to play the Patriots to kick off Week 11 in the NFL on Thursday Night Football.

New England leads the AFC East at 8-2, and they’re currently on a seven-game winning streak. The Patriots opened as a 10.5-point favorite over the Jets at home, per ESPNBET.

That isn’t a lot of time to make a dramatic change to the lineup. So any fans chanting, “Let Brady Cook,” will likely have to wait a while longer for that button to be pushed. However, it’s perfectly reasonable to shift to veteran Tyrod Taylor.

The Jets were going to make a change to Taylor heading into Week 8, but he wasn’t healthy enough to go. So the Jets were forced to go back to Fields, and he delivered a remarkable performance.

However, when you evaluate the Fields’ games this season, his best games have proven to be outliers when you compare them to the majority.

Taylor isn’t great, but it has to be better than this. The wild inconsistencies are hurting the team.

The Jets’ defense stepped up (six sacks), the special teams were dynamic (two return touchdowns), and the offense was anemic in Week 10. It’s time to make a change.
