For the last few years, it has been generally agreed upon that the Denver Nuggets have the best player in the NBA. Nikola Jokic does things that no one else can do, especially from the center position. His ability to control the game is uncanny.
On Wednesday night, Jokic set some NBA history against the Pelicans. He became the second player in NBA history to have four straight triple-doubles to start out the season. Against New Orleans, he finished the game with 21 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists in a 122-88 victory. He is tied with Oscar Robertson for the most games to start a season with a triple-double.
Jokic has many moments of history throughout his short NBA career. He had the highest-scoring triple-double in NBA history last season, scoring 61 points. Jokic also has three MVP Awards already, and looks well on his way to winning a fourth this season.
Denver Nuggets Center Nikola Jokic Has Good Chance to Break the Record
While Jokic has tied Robertson’s record, he will have an excellent chance to break it against the Trail Blazers. Portland has had problems defending so far this season, especially stretch fives. Jokic is in a position where he should be able to control all aspects of that game.
The Nuggets currently sit 3-1, which is good enough for fourth in the Western Conference standings in this young season. Despite his greatness, Jokic doesn’t like it when people call his style of game effortless, as he let them know in the postgame press conference after beating the Pelicans.
“I’m still running like other guys, I’m still jumping like other guys. Sometimes the game goes my way and I have a good night.”
Jokic is one of the rare players who doesn’t seem to care about individual accomplishments or accolades. H’s much more concerned with winning and taking care of his horses back in Serbia than he is about winning MVPs.
Nuggets Center Nikola Jokic Reacts to Setting NBA History
When he was told about this being his fourth straight triple-double to start the season, Jokic barely reacted.
“Just like every other night. I just try to play the right way, and I hope everything is going to come my way.”
The Nuggets continue to play some dominant basketball to start this season. They score the third-most points in the league, in large part because of what Jokic does on the court. His command of the ball, whether at the top of the key or in the post, is what helps run the Nuggets offense.
Denver was a popular pick to finish second in the Western Conference behind Oklahoma City to start the season. While they also trail the Spurs in the standings so far, nothing the Nuggets have done would make anyone dispute that is still the case.
Jokic will try to break Robertson’s record against a Trail Blazers team that just allowed 134 points in a game against the Jazz. Another triple-double to start the season is certainly in play for him.
