Detroit Aims to Finish the Job as Guardians Face Elimination in Game 2

The Detroit Tigers arrived in Cleveland riding high after a gritty 2-1 win in Game 1 of the Wild Card series, thanks largely to a dominant outing by Tarik Skubal, who struck out 14 over 7 2/3 innings–a new franchise postseason mark. Cleveland, meanwhile, scrapped to stay alive, adding a sense of urgency heading into Wednesday’s do-or-die clash.

Now the Tigers will turn to Casey Mize (14-6, 3.87 ERA) to try and deliver the knockout blow. The Guardians will counter with Tanner Bibee (12-11, 4.24 ERA), who has shown flashes of dominance –particularly late in the season and in previous matchups versus Detroit. For Cleveland, it’s win or go home; the stakes couldn’t be higher.

Pitching Matchup & Strategic Dynamics

At first glance, Mize comes into the game with favorable splits vs. Cleveland, and Detroit’s offense boasts depth and several players capable of delivering game-changing hits. Yet Bibee’s recent stretch of form can’t be ignored–he allowed just four runs in 27.2 innings over his final four starts, two of which came against Detroit.

Defensive and bullpen considerations loom large as well. Cleveland has the edge in infield defense, which may matter in tight, low-scoring games. Detroit’s bullpen depth will also be tested if Mize can’t go deep, though manager AJ Hinch is known for creative bullpen usage.

“I’m very excited to see him [Mize] go,” Skubal said. “I’ve got the pleasure of being teammates with him since 2018. We came up together through the Minor Leagues, rehabbed together when we got hurt in the big leagues. I’ve seen the work he’s put in. I couldn’t be more excited to see him pitch and compete.”

Mize’s Redemption Arc

One of the most compelling subplots of this series is the resurgence of Mize. Just a year ago, Mize was left off the Tigers’ Division Series roster–a snub that fueled him throughout the offseason. After undergoing both Tommy John and back surgeries earlier in his career, he channeled that disappointment into a relentless training regimen, determined to prove he belonged in the postseason spotlight.

That work has paid off with an impressive bounceback campaign, and now Mize has the ball in his hands for one of the biggest starts of his career–his first postseason game, in fact. “To have this opportunity a year later in this place is pretty cool for me, just to see that full circle,” Mize said.

“When you have your team trusting in you, your manager trusting in you, that’s always a great feeling as a competitor and as a teammate.” His journey from setback to redemption gives Detroit not just a capable starter, but an emotional anchor as the Tigers look to finish the job in Cleveland.

Betting Lines, Projections & Value Plays

Across sportsbooks, the Guardians are slight favorites: Cleveland sits around -133 on the moneyline while Detroit is offered at roughly +112. The over/under total runs is generally set at 6.5.

Some analysts lean toward Cleveland in this matchup, citing the pitching advantage and Cleveland’s stronger metrics in high-leverage situations. Others point to Detroit’s momentum, the depth of its offense, and the possibility that Mize can control the game long enough to give the bullpen a chance.

One intriguing prop: José Ramírez for 2+ total bases. He’s had success against Mize in the past and could surface as a key offensive factor. Also worth consideration is Bibee over 13.5 outs–in must-win mode, he’s likely to be handed a longer leash than usual.
