The Detroit Tigers are expected to be active this offseason. Some of the team’s biggest needs include another starter or two and an infielder with a strong presence at the plate that can give some protection to Riley Greene in the lineup.
As the MLB hot stove season continues on, the rumors continue to swirl from all angles, especially among the upper-echelon free agents who are going to sign for upwards of $100 million. One of those players is two-time All-Star shortstop Bo Bichette.

Tigers Predicted to Land Bo Bichette in Free Agency
After the massive news of the Toronto Blue Jays signing Dylan Cease to a $210 million contract, many are wondering how that affects Bo Bichette and his free agency trail. Detroit is thought to need either a shortstop or a second baseman, and Bichette is by far one of the best middle infielders on the open market.
In a recent prediction by Sports Illustrated’s Will Laws and Nick Selbe, Bo Bichette is the second-ranked free agent this offseason, and the writers predict he will land with the Detroit Tigers:
“Age: 28 | Former team: Blue Jays | Prediction: Tigers”
“Bichette re-established his value after a disastrous 2024 season in which injuries cost him 81 games and most of his productivity. Before this yearâs playoffs, he had never played any position other than shortstop at the major league level, but perhaps itâs time for a permanent move to second base after years of ranking near the bottom in most defensive metrics at shortstop.”

Bo Bichette has a strong 2025 season, but he did deal with a left knee strain that kept him out for the majority of September and into October. In 139 games, he posted a .311 average with 18 home runs and an OPS+ of 129. He was not named an All-Star this season, but certainly had the final numbers to garner an appearance. The shortstop free agent class this offseason is extremely bleak. After Bo Bichette, who is also projected to land a contract up to $200 million, the next best options are Ha-Seong Kim and Isiah Kiner-Falefa.
The Tigers Have a Shortstop Need
Second baseman Gleyber Torres accepted his qualifying offer to stay with the Tigers, so he is likely going to be the everyday man at second for Detroit.
However, as of now, Javier Baez is listed as the shortstop on the team’s depth chart, but he mainly patrolled center field in 2025.
That leaves shortstop open for the Tigers to bring someone in. Signing Bo Bichette would be one of the biggest splashes this offseason, and if Detroit wants to strengthen its case for being the American League favorite to advance to the World Series, a big signing like this might be the only option.
Detroit has also been linked to Alex Bregman and various other star free agents, but it remains to be seen how interested and aggressive the front office will be in acquiring them.
