Joel Dahmen and his caddie Geno Bonnalie instantly became, as the former said it, “golf famous” for their appearance on the Netflix show “Full Swing” going behind the scenes of life on the PGA Tour.
Perhaps the most memorable scene of the entire series was the deep heart-to-heart the duo had on a plane between tournaments. Both were brought to tears as they talked about their future together and the attempts to get Dahmen back on track.
Report Says Joel Dahmen, Caddie Geno Bonnalie Have Split
Despite being best friends and having worked together for the better part of two decades, they’re reportedly splitting up, at least according to a report from Matt Gannon, that has been aggregated by multiple outlets including Golf.com’s social media.
It’s notable, however, that Gannon is the only one who has reported the supposed breakup. That doesn’t mean Gannon’s reporting is necessarily wrong, but he’s also not exactly the Adam Schefter or Shams Charania of the PGA Tour.
What makes this even more intriguing is a social media post from Bonnalie himself. Neither Bonnalie nor Dahmen have publicly commented on the report to either confirm or deny, but Bonnalie did post to Instagram shortly after the news broke.
The caption was a simple one: “I ❤️ Scotland.”
The post included video and photos from Bonnalie who is in Scotland.
“Walking down the streets of North Berwick, going to play golf with my boss,” he says in the video that is the first slide of the post. There’s an additional photo that shows the two as part of a foursome on the golf course and then another with two conjoined beds, and the duo’s name over each of the beds.It
That adds to the intrigue of it all, to say the least.
If the two were parting ways, it wouldn’t be terribly surprising, despite their longtime friendship. While they refer to themselves as best friends, it was clear from watching “Full Swing” that they don’t always see eye-to-eye, especially as it pertains to Dahmen’s headspace.
Dahmen is in the wilderness right now, to say the least. He has missed the cuts in six of his last seven starts, including last week at the Genesis Scottish Open. The only time he has played the weekend in the last two-plus months came at the John Deere Classic where he was a non-factor, struggling to finish within the top 60.
It was a long, long time ago that Dahmen — shortly after starring on Netflix — finished tied for 10th at the 2022 U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. That marked the best major finish of his career, and he admitted at the time he was still working through his newfound fame but made it clear he was glad to have his best friend on his bag.
“I’m a little more laid back and like to have a little more fun, and I have my best friend beside me in Geno, and he is a ton of fun, and he’s fun to be around,” Dahmen said following his second round at The Country Club in 2022. “It’s kind of weird just us being ourselves and putting it out there for everyone, it’s kind of endearing.”
In that same post-round press conference in 2022, Dahmen also acknowledged the two have had their share of squabbles.
“We fight like brothers,” Dahmen revealed. “We’ve had a couple of dust-ups, and it’s always me barking at him and being a jerk. Not so much blaming him, just kind of being pouty, and yeah, being a butthead out there.”
