Dietmar Hamann has surprisingly said he has been ‘more impressed’ by Manchester United summer signing Benjamin Sesko than Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres.

United signed Sesko from RB Leipzig in the summer after missing out on Ruben Amorim’s first-choice target Gyokeres, who joined Arsenal for £64m.

Gyokeres played under Amorim at Sporting Lisbon, where he scored a staggering 97 goals in 102 games to establish himself as one of the most prolific strikers in Europe.

While the 27-year-old is yet to hit those heights at Arsenal, he has still contributed six goals in all competitions and his overall play has been credited for helping the Gunners storm clear at the top of the Premier League.

Sesko, meanwhile, has scored two goals in his 11 appearances for Manchester United to date.

The £74m summer signing took a while to get up to speed but has now started more than half of United’s Premier League games without making a huge impact.

Old Trafford legend Gary Neville recently revealed his concern over ‘awkward’ Sesko but Hamann has been ‘more impressed’ with the United striker than his Arsenal counterpart.

Newcastle United’s club-record signing Nick Woltemade has also impressed Hamann ‘more than’ Gyokeres after netting four goals in six league games.

Asked which striker out of the three he expects to score the most goals this season, Hamann told footballblog.co.uk: ‘I think the club that will be creating the most chances will be Arsenal, and so that probably puts Gyokeres ahead of the other two, Woltemade and Sesko.

‘Of the three players, I think that Sesko and Woltemade have impressed me more than Gyokeres.

‘If Woltemade is the regular penalty taker for Newcastle from now until the end of the season, then I think I will put Woltemade down as the player to score the most out of those three this season.

‘I think Sesko found it hard at first because it’s a different game in England compared to Germany. But he’s a very talented player.

‘He was always very confident and he’s got a lot of belief in his ability. But then when you come to a club where things are not great, it’s difficult for a striker.

‘Confidence is a big thing, and poor morale at a club doesn’t help. I think he’s done okay so far, but we certainly haven’t seen the best yet because he’s an exceptional talent.

‘People in Salzburg said at 16, 17, when he came to the club, he was better than Erling Haaland. Obviously that’s not the case at the moment, but I think potentially he could be a player who scores 20, 25 goals every season.’

Gyokeres, Sesko and Woltemade are all way behind Erling Haaland in the early race for the Golden Boot award.

The Manchester City striker has 13 Premier League goals, seven more than his four nearest rivals, Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, Brighton’s Danny Welbeck, Brentford’s Igor Thiago and Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta.
