Dodgers Double the Fun With Move That Sticks it to San Francisco

The San Francisco Giants made a little bit of noise ahead of the trade deadline. But their fans could be left raising a ruckus over a transaction that didn’t even involve their team.

At least, not directly.

The Giants pulled off a trio of trades on July 30 and July 31, sending Tyler Rogers to the New York Mets, Camilo Doval to the New York Yankees and Mike Yastrzemski to the Kansas City Royals. In exchange, San Francisco received a total of eight minor leaguers, several that were immediately ranked among the team’s top 30 prospects.

Time will tell if any of those acquisitions wind up making a significant difference at the major league level. But in the meantime, it’s possible that the fan base’s worst nightmare could come true.

A recent Giants first-round draft pick may soon be wearing Dodger blue.

Former Giants First-Round Pick James Tibbs III Winds Up With Los Angeles Dodgers

Among the flurry of moves that occurred just before the deadline on Thursday, the Boston Red Sox acquired Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Dustin May in exchange for outfield prospects James Tibbs III (No. 5) and Zach Ehrhard (No. 27). Tibbs, who was taken by San Francisco at No. 13 overall in last year’s draft, had been traded to Boston on June 15 as part of the package for Rafael Devers.

Ben Kaspick with the Loaded on Giants podcast couldn’t hold his frustration over the fact that the team’s former No. 4 ranked prospect was now a Dodger. Tibbs, who is at No. 7 among Dodgers prospects, was sent to their Double-A affiliate, the Tulsa Drillers.

“The worst part of this deadline is that the Dodgers got James Tibbs III, the #SFGiants’ 2024 first-round pick and a centerpiece in the Devers trade,” Kaspick posted on X (formerly Twitter).

James Tibbs III Traded Again Six Weeks After Going to Boston in Rafael Devers Deal

It’s rare for a recent first-round pick to be traded twice in six weeks, but that’s just what happened to Tibbs. And the 22-year-old outfielder had only just begun to establish himself in the Red Sox farm system.

He opened 2025 at San Francisco’s High-A team in Eugene, OR, but was assigned to Double-A Portland following the trade. In his first 16 games, Tibbs posted a slash line of .286/.378/.397, with a home run and four RBIs. He had just five hits over his last 13 games before the trade, but in Tibbs, the Dodgers now have the player who dazzled Giants scouts over his three seasons at Florida State University, where he hit 55 home runs with 170 RBIs in 176 games.

It’s an ironic, deadline deal gut-punch that, as Kaspick’s post suggests, could sting for a long time, as Tibbs gets the opportunity to prove San Francisco right, while doing it for the team’s biggest rival.
