Dodgers-Red Sox Trade Idea Sends Wilyer Abreu to LA in Return for Promising Pitcher

The Los Angeles Dodgers are expected to be one of the most active teams in MLB’s offseason in the coming months. Despite winning the World Series in back-to-back seasons, the Dodgers’ front office remains stubborn in its pursuit of continuing to improve the roster.

After a disastrous Michael Conforto signing, Los Angeles is thought to need a corner outfielder, and they should consider linking up with the Boston Red Sox in a trade for outfielder Wilyer Abreu. It’s still early in the MLB offseason, but we’ve seen plenty of meaningful trades already. The Mets just linked up with the Rangers on a massive player-swap trade that included Marcus Semien heading to New York in exchange for Brandon Nimmo.

Should the Red Sox Trade Wilyer Abreu?

The Boston Red Sox should consider trading outfielder Wilyer Abreu at some point this offseason, and Los Angeles would be more than willing to add him to its roster. At this moment, Boston has a surplus of outfielders and has already extended both Roman Anthony and Ceddanne Rafaela. With just one spot in the outfield remaining, many believe that would go to Jarren Duran, which leaves Wilyer Abreu out of the equation.

Making a deal with Los Angeles makes sense because of the trade capital within the organization. Boston could ask for a starting pitcher in Emmet Sheehan or River Ryan. Ryan showed flashes of quality stuff, but was sidelined in 2025 due to injury. As for Sheehan, he’s the more attractive candidate between the two. Sheehan had a breakout 2025 after posting a 2.82 ERA over 12 starts and 73.1 innings. Now is the perfect time to move on from Sheehan if he were to be used as trade bait.

Why Wilyer Abreu is a Good Fit in Los Angeles?

Wilyer Abreu should be at the top of the Dodgers’ trade wish list. First off, he would clear the need for a left fielder and fill the spot of Conforto, who is very unlikely to be re-signed.

Abreu is also a strong defensive presence. He’s won two Gold Gloves and is coming into his own as a productive hitter.

In just his third MLB season (2025), Abreu hit 22 home runs in 115 games and posted an OPS+ of 116.

If the Red Sox were to ask for more in return for Abreu, the Dodgers could certainly meet that demand by offering either a bullpen arm or a top-15 prospect.

Both the Dodgers and Red Sox have playoff aspirations in 2026, but making this deal seemingly improves both sides at a position of need.
