Dolphins First-Round Pick Won’t Close Door on Comeback

For whatever reason, things just didn’t work out for Ryan Tannehill with the Miami Dolphins. Picked No. 8 in the 2012 NFL Draft, the quarterback’s career didn’t really start to take off the way he wanted until he signed with the Tennessee Titans in 2019 and won Comeback Player of the Year.

Side note: Comeback from what? He was never more than 8-8 in a season. You mean he won the Hooray You Had Your First Good Year Award. This isn’t a dig at Tannehill, they do this all the time.

Anyway, in an exclusive interview with The Escapist, Tannehill talks about his playing career and whether or not he’d entertain the idea of making a comeback (the kind where he would actually be eligible to win that award).

“I think that chapter is closed,” Tannehill said in an exclusive interview with The Escapist. “I think last year, that was where I was at, if the right opportunity came up and was right for our family. Staying in shape and staying ready. I had plenty of calls, but nothing ever felt like the right opportunity that I was looking for. That was last NFL season. At this point, I think that ship has sailed for me.”

Tannehill says he’s staying in shape, but he just doesn’t throw anymore. That could definitely be an issue for a quarterback.

“Nothing’s ever set in stone,” Tannehill said. “I’d have to start throwing again. I stay in shape just because I like staying in shape and it’s part of how I like to live my life. But as far as going out and having throwing sessions, I haven’t done that since last year. It’d be a little bit of knocking some rust off to get the arm moving again.”

Ryan Tannehill says 2025 has been tough on the Dolphins

Since Tannehill spent his entire career with the Dolphins and Titans, it wouldn’t be a surprise if – given the states of the two teams – he said he doesn’t watch football anymore. Their fans would completely agree.

He was asked specifically about the Dolphins this season and how much they remind him of the 1972 team.

“It’s been a tough year,” Tannehill said. “Probably not what expectations were coming into this year, but we were able to secure a big win last week against the Bills, a really good Bills team. Hopefully they can really build some momentum off of that and carry it forward into Spain, the first NFL game in Spain, which is really cool.

“But just hope the Dolphins can build on what they did last week, and then hopefully if they get a win this week, you can just keep the ball rolling forward. That’s all you can do. You get in a bad spot in a year, not where you want to be. You gotta take it one week at a time and just get the ball rolling forward. Once you get some momentum, then everything you know seems to come a little bit easier.”

Ryan Tannehill says the right things about Tua

Of course, any former Dolphins’ quarterback is going to be asked about the current guy. Tannehill was asked if he’s friends with Tua Tagovailoa.

“No, I don’t have any direct relationship with him,” Tannehill said of Tua. “I’ve spoken to him after games. No direct (contact).

“I think he’s a good player. I know guys that have played with him and like him. Seems like he has a good reputation with anyone I’ve come in contact with, anyone who’s been in contact with him. I want the best for him. He’s grown a lot over the course of his career. Hopefully he can keep growing and getting better.”
