Dolphins Trade Idea Lands Them All-Pro QB After Surprising Announcement

The Miami Dolphins fell 28-15 to the Pittsburgh Steelers, finally putting a rubber stamp on the end of their already long-shot playoff hopes.

Sitting at 6-8. the season has been another disappointment, although it has certainly looked less bad than many expected when the team went 2-7 through the first half of the season.

And in the midst of yet another game in which quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa threw an interception – his 15th of the year – Mike McDaniel had some pretty brash words about the future of the position, at least until the end of the season.

“Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel asked whether he’d consider a quarterback change: “I think quarterback play last night was not good enough. So for me, everything is on the table.” Didn’t say who he’d replace Tua Tagovailoa with.” Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer wrote on Tuesday.

In light of this, rumors have begun to swirl about the lack of job security for Tagovailoa, and that Miami may look to move off the former Alabama star in 2026 and beyond. And so, if they do decide that enough is enough with Tua, then a slightly left-field choice could be the best option for the struggling franchise.

In this trade scenario, the team decide to sign Minnesota Vikings quarterback, Carson Wentz, in the 2026 offseason, and jettison Tagovailoa.

Why Would The Dolphins Move Off Tua Tagovailoa?

Ironically, Week 15 was not Tua’s worst game of the season – indeed by QBR it was one of his top five. But as a wholistic performance on the year, there has been a distinct decline from the man whom the Dolphins gave a four year, $212 million deal to back in 2024.

Despite his injury woes over the past few years, his play has been fairly consistent, always managing an average of 101-106 quarterback rating over the past three seasons, before averaging just 88.5 in 2025.

His accuracy has regressed, he has thrown more interceptions than in any of his other years as a pro (with three games remaining in 2025), and in big moments; like Week 3’s primetime game against the Buffalo Bills, he continuously makes mistakes and feels unable to finish.

Although Miami would incur a much more reasonable cap hit by cutting him in 2027, if owner Stephen Ross wants a fresh start, having already gotten rid of general manager, Chris Grier, he may be willing to sacrifice a few million in cap space for what he may see as an improvement at the position.

Is Carson Wentz The Answer For The Dolphins?

Carson Wentz is not exactly the epitome of consistent and reliable. But he would come as not only a likely cheap-ish option, but one that is coming off some of his best play in nearly half a decade.

Certainly what he was able to do under Vikings head coach, Kevin O’Connell, superseded his play in any place since his 2021 season with the Indianapolis Colts.

Especially when you judge his work against the lukewarm start of second year QB, JJ McCarthy, Wentz could be looking like a starting QB in 2026.

Perhaps he is not a long term option for Miami, but as an interim stop for a year before drafting a franchise signal caller, the team could very well do much worse than the former All-Pro.
