You didn’t think President Donald Trump would sit back and let the Ryder Cup be played in New York without showing up, did you?
In a social media post over the weekend, Trump announced that he’d be in attendance for Day 1 of the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black on Long Island. He also weighed in on the dilemma facing Team USA captain Keegan Bradley, who is weighing making himself one of the six captain’s picks.
According to Trump, Bradley “DEFINITELY” should call his own number when he makes the announcement Aug. 27.
Donald Trump Weighs In On Keegan Bradley’s Ryder Cup Dilemma
In between railing against the fake news, boasting about the government’s Intel deal and defending Roger Clemens against steroid accusations, Trump took some time out on Aug. 24 to give his presidential endorsement for Bradley as a playing captain for Team USA. In the process, the president announced he’d be on the grounds at Bethpage for the opening day of competition.
“Keegan Bradley should DEFINITELY be on the American Ryder Cup Team – As Captain!!!” Trump said in a post to Truth Social. “He is an AMAZING guy. It will be a great Ryder Cup. At the invite of the PGA Tour, I will be there on Tournament Friday!!! President DJT”
Trump’s intention to attend shouldn’t come as a surprise. During his first presidential term, the former New York businessman made the trip to Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey for the final round of the 2017 Presidents Cup. Trump even found his way into the trophy presentation and celebration after Team USA beat the Internationals 19-11.
As is typically the case, Trump’s attendance at the Ryder Cup could come with a little bit of controversy. The Ryder Cup is run by the PGA of America (which is different than the PGA Tour), and they’ve tweaked the president before. Following the Jan. 6 riots in 2021, the PGA of America announced it was rescinding its decision to host the PGA Championship at Trump’s club in Bedminster, N.J.
The decision, according to political insider Maggie Haberman, “gutted” the president.
The decision was legally challenged by the Trump Organization after the PGA moved the tournament to Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla. The two sides ultimately reached an agreement, although the details are unclear.
Trump’s Return to PGA Tour Golf
Trump has been a little busy in recent years with the whole president thing. But he has found plenty of time to play golf, and it’s clear the sport still means a lot to him. He tried and seemingly failed to help broker a deal between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia PIF, even hosting the two sides, including Tiger Woods, at the White House for negotiations.
“We had some interesting discussions,” Trump said of the talks, per ESPN.com.
While the Tour and PIF seem no closer to any sort of a deal to reunify men’s professional golf — they may be even farther apart — PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan credited Trump for his “leadership” and “passion” in the talks.
Perhaps not coincidentally, the PGA Tour released its 2026 schedule in mid-August with a new signature event on the calendar. The Tour will return to Trump National Doral in Miami for a yet-to-be-sponsored event in the spring.
