‘Don’t Be Stunned’ if Bills Cut $7 Million Free Agent Addition Before Season

When the Buffalo Bills signed veteran defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi, the move was seen as a relatively savvy late-offseason pickup. But after his signing, it was revealed he has a six-game suspension looming, and that could make him a potential surprise roster cut.

In March of 2025, he inked a one-year deal with the Bills worth approximately $6.7 million (with incentives and signing bonuses constituting much of its value). After he signed, it was revealed by Bills GM Brandon Beane that Ogunjobi would serve a six-game suspension for a violation of the NFL’s PED policy.

Ogunjobi believes his positive test stemmed from a tainted supplement, and the veteran DT accepted full responsibility for the mistake.

Under NFL rules, he is able to participate in offseason programs, training camp and the preseason, but he has to stay away from team facilities during the first part of the regular season and will be eligible to return Week 7. The suspension voided the guaranteed base salary in his contract, though signing bonuses and incentives may still apply.

Sean Murphy of SB Nation’s Buffalo Rumblings believes this suspension could be enough to put Ogunjobi’s roster spot in jeopardy.

Bills DT Larry Ogunjobi labeled Surprise Potential Cut Heading Into Camp

GettyCould DT Larry Ogunjobi be a surprise cut for the Buffalo Bills?

“Ogunjobi is one of nine defensive tackles on the current roster, and most of those players profile best as three-techs,” Murphy wrote on July 14. “Ed Oliver, T.J. Sanders, DeWayne Carter, Marcus Harris, DaQuan Jones, Zion Logue, Casey Rogers, and Deone Walker are the other defensive tackles in camp. Buffalo obviously can’t keep nine defensive tackles, and really they’re likely to keep a maximum of five, so we have to eliminate at least four players from the current roster.”

The suspension puts Ogunjobi in a precarious position. With younger options vying for snaps and the cost of his deal now less transactable due to the voided guarantee, the Bills could pivot toward cheaper and immediately available talent.

“While it’s unlikely, I believe there’s even a situation where Buffalo is happy with its defensive line depth and the brain trust decides to release Ogunjobi before the regular season begins,” Murphy wrote, adding:

“The Bills have some questions to answer this summer. I assume Ogunjobi will be with the team, but don’t be stunned if he ends up released at the end of August.”

A Look Back at Ogunjobi’s Career Thus Far

Ogunjobi entered the league as the No. 65 overall pick in the 2017 draft by the Browns. He spent four seasons in Cleveland before signing a one-year deal with Cincinnati in 2021, where he notched a career-best 7.0 sacks and 49 tackles in 16 starts.

He then spent the 2022-2024 seasons in Pittsburgh. In 2024, he finished with 41 tackles (five for loss), seven QB hits and 1.5 sacks over 15 games. Altogether, across eight seasons, he has amassed 361 tackles and 27.5 sacks in 124 games.

Over the years, Ogunjobi has established himself as a solid run-stopper and a strong leader—as evidenced by the Steelers nominating him for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award in 2024. He’s never been a big star, but he’s a solid interior D-lineman.

Ogunjobi’s eight-year resume may not be enough to keep him around considering he’ll be gone a third of the season, though. Thus, he could very well be a surprise cut before the final 53-man roster is set.
