The Golden State Warriors had a hot start to the season, but the momentum is gone with them falling to an under .500 record. Injuries to Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green make the situation look worse as they struggle to put together wins. Some Warriors fans have begun calling out head coach Steve Kerr about his decisions hurting the team.
Green specifically took exception to this complaint and used his social media page on Threads to respond to one of them:
“Shut up! Fans ain’t win anything before Steve brought his winning ways to the bay. Save it! You watched incompetence for many years if you a real fan. Shut the hell up and go whisper that s*** to another idiot that wants to listen.”
Someone as outspoken as Green would likely endorse getting a coach fired if he felt the coaching was a real problem for the team’s lack of success. Green referenced Kerr having a historically great track record of the Warriors winning since he became the head coach in 2014 ahead of contending for titles most seasons.
Why Draymond Green Loves Steve Kerr
One overlooked thing about Golden State’s rise in the NBA is the changes that Kerr made once he replaced former head coach Mark Jackson. The Warriors showed potential to contend for a title, but they never made it past the second round during Jackson’s tenure. Kerr instantly won an NBA Championship during his first-ever season as a head coach.
Green was slotted into the starting lineup by Kerr to replace the injured David Lee. Golden State signed Lee to a big contract, so Jackson played him over Green in crunch time of his final season as head coach. Kerr saw something special in Green and recognized winning qualities that he witnessed while playing for the Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs.
Some say Green owes a lot to Kerr for making an unexpected decision and having it pay off instantly. Green found his dream role in the NBA behind Curry and Klay Thompson. The ability to hide his offensive flaws and become an all-time great defender likely doesn’t come the same without Kerr as the coach.
Why Draymond Green Insulted Warriors Fans
The Warriors fans mad at Kerr are calling out his flaws of not getting the best out of his talent when star players like Curry or Butler are out. Golden State’s front office believed in young players Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski helping the team contend this season, but neither player played to their talent level.
Kerr has been criticized for not getting the most out of young Warriors’ talent and for having unique rotations that don’t always work effectively. However, Green felt this is all noise from spoiled fans wanting to easily win in tough situations involving injuries and things coaching can’t control.
The strong statement from Green is an undisputed fact rather than opinion. Golden State did not win until Kerr joined the franchise and became the head coach for four NBA Championships in six NBA Finals appearances. Green’s belief is likely the same as Warriors management, so don’t expect Kerr to leave any time soon.
