Dustin Poirier Opens Up on Final Weight Cut Ahead of UFC 318 Retirement Fight

Dustin Poirier recently opened up about his final weight cut ahead of his retirement fight against Max Holloway. He weighed in at 156-pounds, making his UFC 318 headliner for the BMF title official.

Unlike many fighters who appear mentally and physically drained, Poirier looked relaxed. He was in good spirits, rather than somebody who endured a grueling weight cut.

Poirier said this may have been the easiest weight cut of his career.

“Actually, it’s crazy, you figure this thing out at the end. This was the easiest weight cut, I could’ve been [152-pounds] out here easily yesterday,” Poirier told Daniel Cormier on the ‘UFC 318: Morning Weigh-In Show‘. “I could’ve kept cutting weight, I was feeling good. I came into fight week the lightest I’ve ever shown up.”

Poirier, 36, has competed at lightweight for most of his career, but previously competed at featherweight. His move up paid off, as it allowed him to maintain his strength and focus on his performance, not just making weight.

“It made this whole week a lot smoother, a lot easier…I probably could have [made featherweight for my last fight].”

Dustin Poirier Weighs In on Max Holloway’s Lightweight Move

Poirier also shared his thoughts on Holloway’s permanent move to lightweight move for their trilogy fight. When they fought at UFC 236, Blessed was the reigning featherweight champion. He hadn’t yet adjusted his frame to the 155-pound division and looked somewhat undersized against The Diamond.

Now, Holloway has added mass and is determined to achieve success at lightweight. That transformation showed in his win over Justin Gaethje, where he captured the BMF title with a last-second knockout.

Poirier said that Holloway looks more like a lightweight competitor this time around and will have no issues.

“[Holloway] seems to have filled into the weight class a little bit better,” Poirier said on the ‘UFC 318: Morning’ Weigh-In Show’. [He] seems solid, seems like his body is in the right position here. He looks like a lightweight—a big lightweight.”

The physical change could play a major role in the fight, as both now have properly adjusted lightweight frames. In Holloway’s case, he had more time to prepare compared to UFC 236.

Dustin Poirier Opens up About His Diet Ahead of UFC 318

Heading into his retirement fight, Poirier remained disciplined with his nutrition. After making weight, he discussed how his approach to food has changed and how he plans to recover.

Speaking with Chris Weidman, Poirier shared insight into his carnivore diet. While he’ll make exceptions during his recovery from his weight cut, he intends to return to healthier eating next week.

“[After] this weekend, for sure I’m going to stick with it. I want to be healthy. I’m definitely gonna carb up, get ready for tomorrow night. Eat some more white rice, I got some sweet potato, a bunch of stuff made at the house,” Poirier said. ‘I got my nutritionist here with me, so I’m gonna carb up a little bit, but after this weekend’s over, I’m going back to the healthy life, man.”
