Dusty May’s Massive Bonus on the Line as Michigan Eyes National Championship

Michigan is one win away from a national championship and a significant bonus for head coach Dusty May. If Michigan wins, May will earn a $400,000 bonus tied to his contract. The coach has already secured $300,000 in postseason bonuses, including $300,000 for reaching the title game after defeating Arizona in the Final Four.

Dusty May Bonus Structure Rewards Michigan Title Run

May’s contract includes incentives tied to postseason success, and Michigan’s run has already paid off. By advancing to the national championship game, May earned $300,000 in bonuses, according to Michigan Live.

A win over UConn would add another $100,000, bringing his total championship-related earnings to $400,000.

May’s deal runs through the 2029-30 season and is valued at more than $25.5 million, with an average annual salary of $5.1 million. In addition to tournament bonuses, May also earned $50,000 for winning Big Ten Coach of the Year (media) and another $50,000 for leading Michigan to the Big Ten regular-season title.

May Reflects on Michigan’s Rapid Rise

May addressed Michigan’s transformation into a national contender ahead of the championship game. The team’s turnaround began earlier in the season during a stretch of dominant wins.

“The way we went from being a marginal, average basketball team to being an elite basketball team in a three-day window is something that hopefully we can bottle that and try that again in the future,” May said Sunday.

Michigan won three games over three days during the Players Era Championship in Las Vegas, outscoring opponents by a combined 110 points. That stretch helped establish the Wolverines as a contender.

May is in his second season at Michigan and has quickly reshaped the program.

Dusty May Shuts Down Job Speculation Amid Title Run

May has also addressed speculation about potential coaching opportunities, including the open North Carolina job. He confirmed he will not pursue other positions while leading Michigan.

“After last year I decided I’ll never respond to any job speculation,” May said Friday, via The Athletic. “I had already agreed to terms with Michigan, was 100 percent done, and I made the comment that I was flattered about a certain job opening because of my background, and that was misconstrued, so I just decided I’m never going to comment on any job that I don’t have.”

He added, “I think it’s well documented how happy I am at Michigan.”

May continued, “Obviously my private life, my personal life, my family, their happiness is very important. Yeah, I love it at Michigan, but you’ll never hear me comment on any other job unless Michigan lets me go and then I’ll comment on every job.”

UConn head coach Dan Hurley has also earned significant bonuses during the tournament, totaling $775,000 so far, with an additional $500,000 available if the Huskies win.

For Michigan, the focus remains on securing the program’s first national title since 1989.

The Wolverines will face UConn on Monday night at 8:50 p.m. ET on TBS, with the title and additional financial incentives at stake.
