Eagles Urged to Bring Back Super Bowl Champion CB

If there ends up being one fatal flaw for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2025 you might be able to point to some decisions made just after the franchise defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX in February.

That was when the process started of purging the roster of veteran talent the Eagles thought was overpriced.

We can look back now and say matching the 4-year, $76.4 million free agent contract edge rusher Josh Sweat got from the Arizona Cardinals would have been a great idea.

Another smart move would have been trying to bring back cornerback Darius Slay for one more season instead of letting him sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers on a 1-year, $10 million contract.

The Eagles might have a chance to right one of those wrongs if they can finagle a way to get Slay back for the final 5 games of the regular season after he was released on Tuesday, December 2.

“Steelers and CB Darius Slay have mutually agreed to part ways, Slay’s agents Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey told ESPN,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter wrote on his official X account. “Slay is interested in continuing to play, and will consider signing with other teams. But his time in Pittsburgh has come to an end.”

Getting Slay back would be huge for the Eagles, who have been desperate to find a competent outside cornerback to play across from second-year star Quinyon Mitchell all season.

“Eagles should absolutely bring back Darius Slay,” Go Birds Pod host Eliot Shor-Parks wrote on his official X account.

Eagles Released Slay in Salary Cap Move

Schefter reported on March 3 that the Eagles will designate Slay as a post-June 1 release in order to save an estimated $4.3 million in salary cap space.

“Eagles are releasing six-time Pro-Bowl CB Darius Slay, per sources,” Schefter wrote on his official X account. “If he is designated a post-June 1 release, the Eagles will save $4.3 million against the cap.”

Slay, a 6-time Pro Bowler, signed a 1-year, $10 million contract with the Steelers on March 12 after he was playing some of the best football of his career down the stretch run to the Super Bowl.

The 34-year-old Slay sure didn’t seem like a player toward the end of his career during the Eagles’ dominant run to the Super Bowl — especially when he racked up 6 tackles and 3 pass deflections in a 28-22 win over the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Divisional Round.

Slay finished the postseason with 14 tackles, 5 pass deflections and 1 interception.

He started 9 of 10 games for the Steelers this season with 36 tackles and 3 pass deflections in a diminished role.

Eagles Fans Really Want Slay Back on Roster

The Eagles, who are 8-4, are mired in a 2-game losing streak that seems to have most of their fans questioning the meaning of life.

Getting Slay back might soothe some of that worry.

“Anyone who says no to a Darius Slay reunion is insane,” Eagles fan Dose wrote on their official X account. “What other option for CB2 do we have?”
