Eagles Urged to Make ‘Cost Certainty’ Move on Former First Round Pick

The best evidence of how Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jordan Davis spent his offseason came in a thrilling, 33-26 win over the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3.

On the final play of the game, the Eagles blocked what would have been a game winning field goal, Davis scooped the ball up and ran 61 yards for a touchdown.

It was a rare moment — NFL fans have lovingly coined a “Thick Six” — when a lineman gets to the end zone.

While it was pretty incredible to see a man the size of Davis move like that — all 6-foot-6 and 336 pounds of him — it was also indicative of a player who has elevated his level of offseason training to the point he could even make that type of play.

It’s also indicative Davis, a 2022 first round pick (No. 13 overall), could land a lucrative contract extension from the Eagles sooner than later.

Eagles Mull Contract Extension for Davis

Davis, now in his fourth season, has spent the last 2 years essentially playing in the shadow of fellow Eagles defensive tackle and NFL All-Pro Jalen Carter, with the 2 combining to win a Super Bowl last season — just 3 years after they teamed up to win a College Football Playoff National Championship at Georgia.

While the Eagles already have Davis under contract for 2 more years after they picked up the $12.398 million fifth year option on his contract for 2026, ESPN’s Dan Graziano thinks there’s little chance the Eagles will wait that long to pay Davis.

“As for pending extensions, the Eagles are always proactive, and they have a lot of young defensive players coming up for extensions over the next year or two,” Graziano wrote on October 7. “I have my eye on defensive tackle Jordan Davis, who is playing well in his fourth season and is extension-eligible. The Eagles picked up his fifth-year option for 2026, so they have time to figure out what they want to do. But with fellow DT Jalen Carter eligible for an extension next offseason and defensive backs Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean the offseason after that, it wouldn’t surprise me to see the Eagles try to get ahead of things and get some cost certainty on Davis.”

NFL’s Elite Interior DL Combination

While Carter and Davis proved they were the NFL’s elite interior defensive line combo in 2024 with a dominant playoff run, they cemented things by putting the Kansas City Chiefs in a chokehold for 3 hours in Super Bowl LIX on the way to a 40-22 win — a game in which the Eagles led 34-0 at one point.

Davis got a chance too prove his worth in the Eagles’ season opener and did so while dealing with almost the widest circumstances imaginable.

That came when Carter spit on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott just 6 seconds into the game – and before the first snap — and Davis was forced to essentially put the entire middle of the defense on his back.

Davis responded by making plays all over the field in a 24-20 win, with 6 tackles, 1 TFL and 1 pass deflection. He’s also been on the field for 63 percent of the Eagles’ defensive snaps through 5 games — up from 37 percent in 2024 and 45 percent in 2023.
